An hour of Coltrane at (almost) his most intense - although not all the material is rare. The first two tracks are taken from the Pablo archives - "Blackbird" itself is the justly legendary performance from the Pablo album of the same name, while "Inchworm" is from the "Afro Blue Impressions" album. The meat of the matter is the second two tracks - both taken from Half Note Club broadcasts, the same broadcasts that yielded the two (totally different) "One Down One Up" albums. Early 1965, and you know what that means - Coltrane starting to fight his way out of the straitjacket of tonality, multiphonics-a-go-go, Tyner sidelined. Not that the pianist doesn't solo effectively on both tunes, and unusually he keeps the chord changes going ... Read More:

This CD is great but not top notch there are a few bits of music missing the interview with the music writers is a rare insight to what they do and what can happen. Most of the songs are here but some aren't but it is still enjoyable CD and the interview is a nice extra there is another Mary Poppins CD out there which has every bit of music on it.
