Showcasing the heyday of Elektra Records as the cutting edge label that defined the changing music scene of the 60's from Folk (Judy Collins, Phil Ochs) through the folk-rock boom (Paul Butterfield, Tim Buckley) , via psychedelia (Incredible String Band, Clear Light), west coast rock (The Doors, Love) to the singer-songwriter era (Bread, Carly Simon), the pre-punk snarl of the Stooges and the MC5 up to the advent of glam (Queen, Jobriath). Elektra issued a mighty lot of music without exactly being in the big league, remaining independent till they sold to WEA in the 80s and signed Simply Red and Virginia Astley.
They actually began about 10 years earlier issuing 78s and folk music before folk music wasn't cool but by the time of the Urban Folk revival in the States they had a backlog of important artists like Judy Collins.
In 1964 they signed up on a one single option a group called the Beefeaters who in less than a year became the Byrds.Member Jim McGuinn had previously played on Judy Collins' version of Turn Turn Turn

For many years all I knew of this band was a very scratchy old 45 I had a '(You're Gonna) Hurt Yourself' which I adored and when I saw there was a whole CD of their all of their material available it was a must-have.

This CD comprises of all of their singles (even the rare pre-Pye one) plus songs recorded for an album that was never released. Although 'Hurt Yourself' is still my favourite track on this album, there's not a single bad track on this CD. It's interesting to hear them attempting the styling of other 60's bands, presumably in an attempt to reach the charts (only their superb '98.6' made it).

During the course of this album they manage to sound like the Hollies, the Beach Boys, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich ... Read More:
