I had in my collection Richard Hickox's recording of this alongside Solti's rendition. I was then told that, apparently allegedly etc, that Sir John Eliot thought his recording of Verdi's Requiem was his finest recording to date, so I had to buy it.

It is true - the performance of the Requiem and the four Sacred pieces are masterful. The Dies Irae, that most famous moment, is typical Gardiner - punchy and driven with no let up - 'day of wrath and doom impending' indeed. However, in the more gentle moments, such as the opening and later in the Libera me, Gardiner weaves a beautiful serenity into the performance.

The test for me with this piece is the 'Domine, libera, Domine' at the very end with the almost-Spanishlike ... Read More:

... but unfortunately the choir sounds muddy and the soloists are trite (Fleming and D'Archangelo) or downright disastrous (Bocelli).

Gergiev certainly has a sense of drama that becomes a magnificent piece like the Verdi Requiem. The tempi and dynamics provides the right setting for the words. For instance the bass drum in Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum sounds like an artillery cannon and it makes my hear skip a beat no matter how many times I hear this part of the recording... Marvellous... Other conductors take note. Trumpets are clear and distinct makin the triplets stand out intense and insisting. And I could go on about the opening cello melody and so on and so on.
Unfortunately the choir doesn't deliver clear diction, so the ... Read More:

i thought that karajan's 1972 recording featuring freni, ludwig, cossutta and ghiaurov as the soloists was the definitive version. however, i've lately been listening to his 1985 digital recording featuring tomowa-sintow, baltsa, carreras and van dam, and it's really a very fine recording. all the soloists are absolutely wonderful - carerras surprisingly so, considering. listen to the final octave rise to high-C by tomowa-sintow in the "libera me" (from 12'09"-12'38") - she's clearly at the height of her powers. karajan - as he did in 1972 - gets the tempi just right, particularly in the "libera me", where many other conductors tend to rush headlong at breakneck speed, mistaking momentum for artistic integrity. i won't go on - but a great, great recording from all ... Friscay was DG's star conductor before the advent of Karajan and the former's untimely death. Despite sonic limitations this requiem is white hot from start to finish. Soloists all acquit themselves superbly. What a musical singer Stader makes despite a smaller than usual voice in the part. On one disc this memorable performance is a bargain, although a pity stereo wasn't available.

this recording is quite simply dreadful. avoid at all costs. the choir is patchy, the conducting ropey, the recording levels low and dull and the soloists only passable. this dodgy recording rather sounds like it was done hurriedly. a shame, for ricciarelli is usually fantastic.

reviewers have often noted that karajan's tempi seem too slow, expansive, indulgent and excessive. in this recording he gets them just right.

they have also criticised that he has too much involvement in the recording process, enforcing a fake lusiousness and sheen onto his orchestra. in this recording the sound is exquisite.

the soloists are wonderful on this recording. freni's voice is divine. the final climb to the high-c on "libera me" is just thrilling.

all-in-all, a very fine recording indeed.
