Alicia de Larrocha has been a singular champion of her native Spanish piano music for over 50 years by performing composers such as Grandos, Albeniz, Rodrigo and of course Falla. 2002-03 marks her retirement from the concert hall. I used this recording to prepare for a review of a live concert with Ms. De Larrocha and the San Francisco Symphony, who made her North American debut with that orchestra in 1954. Today at 79, she has lost none of her percise, fluid and atmospheric piano gifts that she brought to her wide ranging repertoire including Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. This recording demonstrates a younger pianist with more powerful attacks on the music's more forceful moments. Combine this with one of this last century's most ... Read More:

I have been looking for a recording of Manuel de Falla's Spanish Dance No. 1 for some time, so when I saw this recording advertised on the Amazon website, I snapped it up. I ordered it on the Thursday, it arrived on the Friday.

Curiously, it is described on the CD, simply as `dance' but no matter. When I first became interested in classical music, over 50 years ago, one of the first LPs I heard was by the Suisse Romande Orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet; I was impressed by his masterly control of the orchestra then, as I am now in this recording, which is an analogue to digital remaster.

The whole of de Falla's music - Nights in the Gardens of Spain, The Three-cornered hat and A Short Life - contained in this CD ... Read More:

I'm not that thrilled with Bonell's interpretation of the Orange Juice - however iconic it may be. I've heard him play it live with the same reservations. It's all just a bit passionless, I'm afraid.

Listen to the version by Narcisco Yepes (ASIN: B000025K3I) before you buy this one - I think you'll be persuaded I'm right.

This box of 4 CDs groups some of the familiar and less familiar recordings (1949-1964) of the acclaimed English pianist Clifford Curzon (1907-1982).
Curzon was considered as one of the greatest interpreters of Mozart and Schubert of his time and this box proves, if anything, this tag has stood the test of time.
Disc #2 has his well-known recordings of Schubert's 4 Impromptus D. 935 (from 1952) and the Sonata in D major D. 850 (from 1964). The Sonata especially is a marvel of profundity and sensitivity, and should figure in any serious Schubert collection.
The revelation of this box is however disc #4 with never before released recordings of Mozart's Piano concerto #23 and #27, dating from 1964 with the Wiener Philharmoniker under ... Read More:
