This recording from 1973 was made to celebrate 21 years of John Reed in the company. Musically it is conducted with flair and some enlightening passages. Roysten Nash produces subtle elements of Sullivan's score. The principals without exception are all past their prime and cannot match the later Telemarc version. To find the best Mikado, try and find the 1957 recording with Donald adams, Thomas Round, Jean Hindmarsh and Peter Pratt, it can be found!! brilliantly refurbished onto CD. That is and was D'Oyly Carte at their best. There is also the 1957 Pirates available! Happy hunting.

the first disc here is ok but nothing special, has a slightly funky vibe to it, though perhaps it only seems average compared with disc 2, which is superb. pig and dan & gabriel ananda are obviuos highlights. the mix really flows, and showcases fanciulli's more progressive side. not really a bad track on disc 2. just as good as his last renaissance offering and this comes highly recommended to any house music fan. i also found the mix really quite refreshing, given that many mixes i come across these days seem to be more minimal than i would like, its nice to see a dj pushing thigs forward musically still, but at the same time producing a record that makes me want to get up and dance. house music at its finest

this is disappointing. i could be being unfair, in itself it's not a poor album, jumpy, rhythmic, and a little bit spikey. the trouble is that the first album, other animals, is brilliant, creative, never dull, and full of potential, and this is the same album with better production values (all good so far, the first was pretty scratchy) and with more focus on the catchy and dancy bits (should be good also, right?) but the let down is just that. why make another album? i could always just play the first one twice, (or one and a half times, since at 27 minutes long this barely scrapes beyond EP length) and why cut out the less rythmic bits? and why play the same riff a million times? this is so cold and frankly formulaic, no wit, no surprises, ...
