3.Real Live by: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Search : Real Live
In my opinion Frank Marino is at his best live, and this is his best 'live' cd.There are long, and I mean LONG, stretches of blistering, beautiful, fierce and uplifting guitar work.Although there may appear to be quite a number of tracks on each of the two cds, many run into each other seamlessly and produce long guitar excursions that just leave you stunned.'He's Calling' and 'Poppy' are worth the price on their own and there's tons more. If you have never heard this guy or have been put off by the rather silly 'reincarnation of Hendrix' stories from over 35 years ago, then you are in for a treat. Yes there is an obvious Hendrix influence in some of his work, but there is so much more. This guy is brilliant and I hope he is one day going to ... Read More:

First three points.

One. This is a reissue of a 1988 recording not a new 2001 release.

Two. If you are looking for the version of the Nunc Dimittis that was the theme tune of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 1979 you may be disappointed. It used a treble voice. A counter tenor is used here and the effect is quite different. This piece is also not a good guide to the sound of the whole disc,
as it is the one most conventionally set within the English Choral tradition, whilst the other have a quite different sound (see below)

Three. Choral Works may be a misleading title. All the works here are for one or two voices, never a full choir.

OK. That's settled.

BACK TO THE STREET: The opening track has a great drum section. The song starts like a ballad, but builds up into a real rock classic with a thought provoking message and great musicianship. Considering this is John Schlitt's first song and John and Dino Elefante's first album production for Petra, its an impressive start. ALready Petra have a more pronounced rock sound with pounding drums from veteran Louie.

YOU ARE I AM: This is a praise song and a half. The guitar rift is one of my favourites of any group ever. And the praise is simple and heartfelt and straight to the point. ANd Louie is excellent on the drums in this song paticularly, a pounding beat to a great praise song. This is how praise should be done!

Another beautiful, laid-back and melancholy album from Michael Chapman, who often jokes he is more depressing than Leonard Cohen. But if this is depressing, then I enjoy being depressed, as Chapman, creates such incredible moods with his guitar, weaving the listener in and out of reality with his superb lyrics and interesting trains of thought. On this album, unusually, he has a backing band on some of the tracks, and of course, this adds to fill the sound somewhat from the generally lone guitar and soulful voice this man has honed to perfection in creating a drifting and easy world of escapism, taking us far away from the rush and turmoil of our daily lives. Yet another Michael Chapman album for the collection, and he gets more addictive the more you ... Read More:
