The phrase " All round entertainer" tends to be overused but it certainly applies to Sammy Davis jr. Since his death there have been a few UK releases but not much from his Reprise catalogue, until a trio appeared this year (the other two are
in-performance on WEA) which showcase Sammy's on-record talent. This Charly compilation is a combination of studio records and in-performance tracks which cover the mid to late '60's and the generous 40 tracks on this double-CD, unearth a
variety of known and more obscure songs. Opening with his hit, I'VE GOTTA BE ME, the selection proceeds through a swinging I'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN and a refreshing jazzy approach to Bacharach & David's THIS GUY'S IN LOVE WITH YOU. A live-performance WITH ... Read More:

44.Mendocino by: Sir Douglas Quintet

If you're looking for the Quintet's classic 1969 album "Mendocino", this isn't it (in spite of the misleading title). If you're looking for a good introduction to the band's work, this isn't that either. What it is is a rather shoddy compilation of uncertain parentage.

The music frequently scales the heights (which is why I gave the CD as many as three stars), but unfortunately the same can't always be said of the sound quality. Many of the tracks were clearly dubbed from vinyl (complete with annoying clicks and pops), with "Nuevo Laredo" in particular sounding as though it was played with a dirty needle.

The booklet (such as it is) doesn't give any details of when the tracks were recorded or under what circumstances, ... Read More:

This recording features many songs that were only obtainable through older recordings on LP. Now, Newley's songs have been remastered and are featured on this new incredible recording. Do not let the fact that it is an import prevent a purchase. This CD is more of the "recording artist" Newley, while other releases have been about the Broadway/West End performer. While the claim that this is the first time any of these songs have been released on CD is, presumably false (see the Once in a Lifetime Collection for proof of this, especially the first track on each), this recording does have many songs that aren't available on other compilations. The low price and liner notes are high selling points for this "Newley Recorded" ... Read More:

Petula probably recorded more music in the sixties than anybody else, but never sacrificed the quality. These recordings, mostly from 1967 or 1968, but including four from 1966, are among Petula's finest. There are her own hits (Color my world, Other man's grass, Who am I? and Cat in the window) plus a lot of covers and less famous originals.

Among the covers are England swings (Petula really swings on this, in a way that Roger Miller never did), Cherish (The Association), Winchester cathedral (New vaudeville band), Reach out I'll be there (Four tops), Here there and everywhere (Beatles), Smile (Nat King Cole), Black coffee (Peggy Lee), The last waltz (Engelbert Humperdinck - Petula's French version was a French hit for her), Answer me (Frankie ...
