This comprehensive set of Anton Webern's complete works is just that, complete. Well packaged in a slip case with a good booklet we find the content pretty much the only versions of these various "difficult" pieces of music that you will ever need. I'm no expert, having just discovered the "Second Viennese School", but I think that "difficult" depends upon what you are comparing Webern to!

If, like me, you have arrived here via rock and Jazz, you won't find this music difficult, just different. Lovers of Brian Eno's soundscapes from the 1970's might well take to Webern. So will those who are happy to explore the outer fringes of Coltrane's later works, even though Webern sounds nothing at all like either! Music for the "non-mainstream" ... Read More:

When first I saw this CD I was very excited by the prospect of such a high quality choir performing repertoire that I believe to be of exceptional beauty and brilliance. However, my reaction on hearing the disc was one of extreme disappointment, and subsequent listening has served only to confirm my initial impressions.

The music on this disc is all loosely connected with the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostella in Spain, and brings together works spanning four centuries. The earliest pieces are taken from the Libre Vermell, which was compiled not for Santiago but for Montserrat, and date from the late twelfth century, through to the motet Crux Fidelis by Joao IX of Portugal. It must be mentioned that this latter work is very ... Read More:

The St.Luke Passion was the work that brought Penderecki to audiences outside of Poland in the 1960's. Across Europe and the U.S. it received numerous performances to packed halls. What is suprising is that its very modern and mostly atonal musical language was the type of thing that usually drove audiences from the halls back then. There was a something there though that gripped audiences and held them. I suspect what that something is varies from listener to listener. There is no doubt that this is a tough nut to crack but it is worth the effort. Naxos have now provided the listener with an inexpensive way to do that with this new (2002) recording.
Antoni Wit has been an avid conductor of Penderecki's music from the begining of his career. Its twists and ... Read More:

My wife (for whom I bought it) says that this CD set is very restful and soothing and I have to say that I quite like to hear the singing in the background whilst I slave away at the computer. And, of course, the great thing is that we got two CDs for about the price of one. Excellent!
