The Lovin' Spoonful's third "regular" LP (not counting a quickly recorded soundtrack for Woody Allen's "What's Up, Tiger Lily") was released in 1966 around Thanksgiving Day. At the time, the band had begun to leave New York behind to move to the sunnier West. As guitarist Zal Yanovsky said: "'we were the least in the East and the most on the Coast." For a New York band, The Lovin' Spoonful sure began to sound like a West Coast act by increasing their use of the folk-rock style and by using more vocal harmonies than before. I ordered this set after seeing it advertised in an email from Amazon. I was not very familiar with Johnny Cash, with the exception of Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire. This double CD really has blown me away. Cash's voice is great but the entertainment comes as much from his banter with the prisoners as from the songs, many of which have jail themes. All in all a great showcase for a natural performer. The sound quality is also excellent demonstrating better stereo effects than many modern albums.

My top 5 songs to get from this record are: 'Jackson' - An amazing tune 'Long legged guitar picking man' 'oh what a good thing we had' 'Darlin companion (live)' 'the loving gift' - a very nice ballad These are great very different country songs... This is a quite enjoyable compilation. Let the music play!
