Richard Shindell's name is often cited by his contemporaries as one of the most under-rated signer / songwriters around. He is very much a musicians musician and whilst recent solo efforts have been well received he remains "under the radar" to the majority of the general public. South of Delia provides Shindell with an opportunity to cover the likes of songs by Bob Dylan, The Band, Woody Guthrie etc and he seems to find a passion in his voice which is less obvious in his own work. Married to his excellent guitar work and solid production values, this is a gem of an album and one which grows with each listen.

I first became a fan of Joan Baez in the heady days of the sixties, when America was wrestling with racism and other social injustices, and opposition to the Vietnam War was mounting. Much has changed since then. Presidents have come and gone, and a wholly different set of challenges has been presented. The war on terror, post 9/11, also involves a very different enemy. And, of course, Joan Baez has changed too. Most obviously, she's some 40 years older and the flowing, jet black hair has given way to a silvery blue, closer cropped look. But for me, that's about the extent of it. That crystal clear soprano voice is still intact, and her ability to bring a wide range of songs together into a coherent album has not waned. Read More:

Here is something special: Gene Clark, ex-Byrds songwriter equipt with one of the most expressive voices in rock history - soulful with no hysteria - teams up with up and coming Texan singer/songwriter to record a fine album of country-rock. Carla Olson's powerful alto is able to harmonise with Clark's tenor as if she was born a sister to him - listen particularly to Olson's Are We Still Making Love and to their delicious cover of Phil Ochs's Changes. Highly recommended, and makes me wish even more that Clark was still here with us. Thank you Gene.
