From the staccato percussion of Tony Allen's "Ariya" to the gentle and elegant "Diaraby" by Ali Farka Toure with the haunting steel guitar of Ry Cooder in the background, this album is solid gold - every track a winner, representing a dozen African countries and various styles of African music from highlife to soukouss. The best introduction to African music on the market.

A treasure trove of Guinean music. This stunning double CD cronicles the era of the national orchestras in Guinea in the 1960's and early 1970's. You'll find everything here from soulful wistful laments to up tempo funk numbers from the vaults. Bembeya Jazz National are present along with a plethora of other fine artists. The beats shift and change in seconds - Guinean music is characterised by congos, tinny drums and those light, transcendal guitar solos. Brilliant liner notes tell you about the background to the music and the history of the groups.
If you like the music of Orchestra Boabab this will be right up your street.

I came across this album by fluke actually, but soooo glad I did. Flicking through the channels I came to the film 'Unfaithful'. Brilliant film. Went to look up the soundtrack for it and someone had written a review saying that the particular track from this album was not on the soundtrack to Unfaithful and thankfully they said which one it was on. This one!

This album is fantastic, beautiful, bluesy, soulful and sexy to boot. I can't stop listening to it! I am about to go and purchase more from this guy and hope to be just as enthused by his other work.
