As a huge Mayfield fan, I'd heard about this collection well-before its release, & eagerly anticipated the day it hit the shops. Oh dear - what a disappointment. A remix is supposed to enhance the original - I'm sure we can all think of examples where the 'extended' or '12-inch mix' improved the original version, but the interpretations on this album are simply awful. The majority of the remixers cannot have spent more than half an hour working on these tracks; the only exception is the Ashley Beedle edit of "Do Do Wap...". There is the argument that original versions did in fact have enough about them rendering any remix project useless - however, someone at quality control really goofed-up here. Read More:

This truly magnificent album amazes and delights with every track, from the optimism of 'Move On Up' through the power of 'If There's Hell Below We're All Gonna' Go' to the cynical 'Superfly'. The music still sounds modern even though some of the songs are 30 years old. This is a must for any real music lovers collection and a fitting celebration of an inspirational man.

This truly magnificent album amazes and delights with every track, from the optimism of 'Move On Up' through the power of 'If There's Hell Below We're All Gonna' Go' to the cynical 'Superfly'. The music still sounds modern even though some of the songs are 30 years old. This is a must for any real music lovers collection and a fitting celebration of an inspirational man.

Curtis Mayfield had established his credentials as a member of the Impressions, both as a writer and performer. In addition he had established a reputation as a producer. His output had come to focus on the Civil Rights struggle, and this would continue with his solo work. Thus, the tracks here have a positive message, of self determination and social justice, of freedom and equality. That is all set to the funky multi layered sound that would become Curtis' trademark. The full version of the albums best known track "Move On Up" is an excellent example; that familiar horn opening, driving congas and Curtis' falsetto vocal and it's message of hope, with the close a funk workout that was absent from the hit single version.
