this is an excellent lp, produced by Richard Formby (Spectrum/Dakota Suite) it really stands out from alot of the circa '89-91 uk indie noise that was being released by the likes of Slowdive, Pale Saints, Boo Radleys etc etc, quite why the band were lumped in with the "scene that celebrated itself" is anyone's guess, lazy-hack journalists is my theory. the main difference was the lack of effects and quadruple tracked guitars, this is raw & visceral music which was quite out of keeping with the generally blissed-out indie scene at the time. the band were just as impressive live, aggresive guitar with some very amusing sixth-form "hate poetry". I bought False Cathedrals just to see what this band was like. Could have been a rather middlingly-expensive mistake, but it was definitly worth it. False Cathedrals, particularly the opening six tracks, were simply stunning, and the album has stuck in my playlists ever since. So, I ordered Songs In The Air to see how they developed from the fantastic (i.e buy it) False Cathedrals. Now. I personally don't think it is as good. There isn't anything on the album to match 'Blessed By Your Own Ghost', but Song In The Air certainly has enough to hold it's own head high, because it's Elliott, and that is enough for some kick-ass, beautiful music. Elliott... hmmm. I always felt that they never got as famous as they should have, as is the way with so many bands with interesting sounds and talented singers. I first heard them when a good friend of mine played me 'False Cathedrals' back in 2001. The record sent shivers up my spine, became a favourite within seconds, and even now there is a CD of it in the CD player in my car. Their follow up to this record, 'Song In The Air' was also a masterpiece. 'Photorecording', from what I can gather about it, is something a little unusual - a studio recording that was performed live, with the songs in the same order as at the last live show the band ever played.
