This is, of course, a reissue of the Signum Classics set with the notes and texts on a CD Rom but costing a third of the price of the original issue!

The music is superb, the recording accoustic perfectly judged, and the performances absolutely first class. Alistair Dixon's direction is ideal. The music is allowed to breathe, is never forced, and the polyphony made absolutely clear - even in the 40 part motet 'Spem in Alium'. One might argue that the performances are slightly 'cool' and lacking in emotion but I think this is good thing. Tallis' music is intensely spiritual and loses some of its transcendal beauty when performed in a romantic way.

I cannot praise this set too highly. Tallis is one of the greatest ... Read More:

This is a truly excellent set, and at a bargain price. I have loved Tallis's music for many years and have some dearly loved recordings by The Tallis Scholars, the Hillard Ensemble and The Taverner Consort which won't be superseded by this set, but are certainly beautifully complemented by it. The approach of Alistair Dixon and Chapelle du Roi is calm and restrained, and the music glows as a result. The singers are very good, tuning is virtually faultless and the absence or restrained use of vibrato ideal. The overall sound is very warm, by and large, emphasised by resonant acoustics in all the recording venues, and this eight-year project is a very fine achievement which does real justice to one of England's greatest composers.

As a fervent atheist, I was move greatly by the sheer depth of devotion reflected in this music. A conversation of a profound nature is started across the short chasm of four and a half centuries.
I was exposed to later choral music as a schoolboy (particularly Byrd- Tallis' protege) but never felt so overwelmed.
Other recordings may be technically superior, but this is great value.

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), ... Read More:

This re-issue of various work perofrmed by the Tallis Scholars contains their outstanding performance of Allegri's "Miserere", this was first released on the budget Classics for Pleasure label on LP. For many people, myself included, this was an introduction to this work and as it turns out is one of the finest performances ever. Even the Scholars later recording made in Rome does not match it, as good as it is.

This recording shows the Scholars at their best and is an impressive recording that exploits the church acoustics to the full.

The history of the piece is known to many people, the youthful Mozart transcribing it from memory after one hearing to beat the Papal ban on performances outside the Sistine chapel. ... Read More:
