I came across this album through a Spanish flatmate, and it's been one of my favourites ever since. Infectious rhythm and melody, and some amusingly melodramatic but also surprisingly bittersweet lyrics - what more could you want? A compilation of contemporary Cuban music, there's a great mix of exuberance and balladry here. IMHO the mark of a great album is when you like all the songs, but your personal favourite keeps changing over time. Well, with the exception of a couple of the slower numbers here (Inolvidable, Valeria and Cada Vez are a bit overdramatic for my liking), Havana Masters Vol. 1 definitely fits this criteria, which is why I chose it as my first review. Aw. A jolly and melancholy gem.
