This double CD contains 29 live Compay Segundo performances. The first CD contains a conversation with Compay about his childhood and what he feels about his music. This is the original Spanish.

The CD split into "club" concerts and "theatre" concerts. I prefer the "clubs" side because it's a bit livelier and less polished than the "theatres" side, where the addition of clarinets and backing vocalists gives a more orchestral sound. Lots of good tracks, including an interesting son version of Carlos Gardel's "El Dia Que Me Quieras" and a great cover of "Malagueña". The cover of "Guantanamera" that closes the 2nd CD is a bit iffy (IMHO) but one cannot fault the enthusiasm of the performance.

Fairly good liner notes and ... Read More:

This Roberto Torres Retrato Musical, released by SAR in 2001, can boast of a very good remastered sound quality unlike the one from the original SAR cd's which got re-edited in the 1990's!

Apart from that, this compilation is a mess! A mixed salad also because as well as including SOME of the very good material from his New York recordings (1979-1984) it also includes A LOT of material from his albums recorded in Miami (after 1984) which are VERY commercial in style, and WAY LESS of my own taste!

Not only I am a person who is TOTALLY against compilations, but on top of that, there are 2 songs that got re-edited for this compilation/collection Cd!

Para Que Aprendas (3:28 mins instead of 5:13 mins!!!)

Maybe I haven't looked in the right place but I am astonished to find that this record has not been reviewed. The Rough Guide certainly rates it as one of its top 100 World Music CDs so I am not making any pretence at originality. Suffice to say that the combination of the Cuarteto Patria's wonderful sense of rhythm, tight but, paradoxically, with that slightly loose, rough feel that anyone who has heard Ochoa's contributions to Buena Vista etc. will recognise, Eliades' high but gruff vocals and the soaring saxophone of African legend Manu Dibango is irresistible. There must be reams of other five-star reviews lost out in cyberspace somewhere.
