Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre. I have loved this opera since this recording was first released thirty years ago. Montemezzi is almost totally unknown (and unrecorded) yet this stunningly dramatic and beautiful work is the equal of anything by his world famous contemporary Puccini. It tells a dark, melodramatic tale of love and revenge, but creates characters that are complex and memorable. The music is ravishing. Montemezzi, in his first great success, forges a totally individual language, richly coloured, wonderfully melodic, yet also compact and tightly constructed--not a note is wasted. The big love duet is simply one of the most overwhelming of its kind in all opera. The cast is uniformly excellent, with Domingo at his most heroic and ardent, and even the problematic ...
