One morning I was happy going about my business, when I found myself feeling rather sleepy, a colored gas filled the room...the next thing I know I was tied to a chair, a mysterious figure puts a CD on...

There's something deeply disturbing about this album, I don't know, maybe it's the fact that within a few minutes we hear a gorgeous string arrangement (you can just imagine the birds tweeting), then straight into a march, then a manic jazz piece! Add to the recipe a big dollop of typical prisoner dialogue and you have this album.

strange? Yes, and its brilliant!

I do own the original issues of these alums, but they never really worked for me, they just seemed thrown together, a collection of music, that's all... ... Read More:

5.Laughter Tears and Rage by: Act

Because of the Claudia Brucken connection, it's probably inevitable that many comparisons were drawn between Act and Propaganda, especially as Propaganda's '1234' album was originally released at about the same time as 'Laughter, Tears and Rage'.

Such comparisons are probably misplaced though - it's true that Act do sound similar to Propaganda, but Act's songs are far poppier and less dark than, say, 'Secret Wish'-era Propaganda. Unfortunately, whilst I consider 'A Secret Wish' to be the definitive mid-80s synth album, there are parts of 'Laughter, Tears and Rage' which point fairly directly at the musical horrors that were unleashed during the early 90s.

Not to say that it's a bad album, but on the 'main' disc there seems to ... Read More:

Before the undoubted luxury of recorded music, people either made thier own or, if they were rich (or lucky) heard it in concert. In order to disseminate their work more widely, and to make some money, many composers transcribed their orchestral, choral, and chamber works for the piano. Many transcribed for soloists, but more did so for either four hands at one piano or piano duets.

Brahms had a fondness for doing this as the piano was his instument and many of his works were transcribed in this way. Naxos has produced a series of CDs of this music, of which this is volume 1.

Correctly described as "four hand piano music", this Naxos series is performed by the long-standing piano duo of Silke-Thora Matthies and Christian Kohn. In general, ... Read More:

Janacek's music is extremely post-stravinskian with yet a constant reference to an old Slavonic tradition. The introduction is powerfully dominated by the wind instruments but is kind of dubitative, suspended, sad even, unsure for sure. The Kyrie reestablishes vibrant optimism. The soprano takes us into this mood and when the Gloria comes, neurotic, escaping an invisible and un-understandable danger, when it turns into a chase or maybe a procession rhythmically pushed forward by percussions and strings, we try to forget the choir that sounds more menacing than the solace of a great mass of helpful souls. The Credo then explodes like a confrontation to the impossible conquest of the faith and fate a Christian would like to have and control. In front of us we meet with ... Read More:
