Assuming that the "branches" means what happned after the roots grew this is a mixed bag where the obscure goes hand in hand with the unobscure. Rock the Joint for instance was first made in 1948 by the unknwon Jimmy Preston and covered some 4 years later by Bill Haley.And this is the only hit version.No one knew who Preston was until a few years ago when the CDs began to appear. Somewhat throwing the concept though is Johnny & the Hurricanes.Buckeye-one of the total classic instrumentals but its from 1960.Lee Dorsey's Lottie Moe is from even later!And no sense in using these tracks either You get the impression eveything was selected with a pin-which jabbed the word SUN more times than anything-even going as far as to ... I was always on the lookout for a definitive Ry Cooder Album - one that captures the essence of his style. This record is just that. Great production, evocative, it takes you from the everglades to downtown New Orleans whilst passing through Texas on the way. A beautiful journey that has to be experienced in a particular mood. It is, in short, the perfect complement to Bop till you drop. Some of the songs are a little indulgent but so is a bottle of fine red wine. A must for anyone into slide guitar and the possibilities.
