This disc has been superbly produced by Wergo - you could hardly hope to find either of these works in a more sympathetic context, for the quality of the recording and the publication (including a very fine 56-page booklet) is simply as excellent as you will find. Orpheus Behind the Wire is a set of five a capella choruses, written by Henze beween 1981 and 1983. Edward Bond, the librettist for the 1975 We Come to the River, wrote the five poems. Henze's unaccompanied vocal writing is exemplary; one only wishes more composers had his fabulous natural talents. If I have a very minor cavil here it is that the twenty minutes involved might just tend very slightly to fade towards the monochrome - Henze has achieved better levels of concentration ...
