This is a fantastic comic opera, fun for all the family and based on a charming Czech folk tale about a girl who literally makes life hell for the devil who abducts her. The score is full of Dvorak's inventiveness and draws heavily on Wagnerite ideas too. The singing is warm and overall very good, with some minor quibbles particularly about the singer who plays the Devil. Libretto is well produced and clear.

Compilation of blues sides from the late '40s/early '50s. The usual Ace Records production values are here, with the expected high sound quality, useful sleeve notes and label scans, but despite what the CD cover says about this comp featuring a range of styles, most of what's here is on the downtempo, late-night blues joint tip. If that's your bag, you won't be disappointed. However if you're looking to cut loose to early rhythm-n-blues, give this one a miss and get the excellent "Gaz's Rocking Blues" CD (also on Ace) instead.

Debbie's biggest hit was Tammy, but it did not appear on either of the two original albums. It is a pity that it was not added as a bonus track, but this is still a wonderful collection of music from a very under-rated singer.

These albums were recorded in 1959 and 1960, but they owe nothing to the rock'n'roll of the time. Instead, they owe much more to the Great American Songbook, though there are some country songs here too - Am I that easy to forget (Skeeter Davis), City lights (Ray Price) and I love you a thousand ways (Lefty Frizzell) - which are given the lush orchestral treatment, and very nice they sound too.

Among the classic songs included here are Moonglow, Hooray for love, I like the likes of you and Time after ... Read More:

Dickie Pride was in my opinion ( and many of the Parnes Stable ) one if not the finest voice that this country offered to rival America,s best. Unfortunately his musical genius was stifled by the repetative touring days of the early 60's Rock & Roll Tours, courtesy of Mr Larry Parnes. This album is a brilliant compilation of initially his rock and roll days interplayed with what I consider as his masterpiece collection from the album Pride Without Prejudice. At the time Dickie Pride was condidered a traitor to the cause by transforming from awhat appeared to be an out and out rock and roller to a serious contempoary singer. But this was the kind of music that he wanted to sing and had the range and capacity to do justice to the ... Read More:
