Had I not heard Gotan Project before this I suspect I would have been a good deal more impressed. Unfortunately I had and was seduced by many references to and comparisons with Gotan and then really, really disappointed. If you want tango-electronica, go for Gotan, you won't need to bother with this.

Naked City to the uninitiated: awful racket - chances are if you're looking at this CD you'll have heard of John Zorn and know what to expect from this (relatively) short lived but prolific (5, 6 albums) project. GRAND GUIGNOL Consists of 8 "newer" works, varying from calming ambience to peculiar avantgarde / noise as Zorn & co. try their hand at compositions by the likes of Claude Debussy and Alexander Scriabine. Tracks 9-41 are taken from the TORTURE GARDEN album and with an average length of under a minute these tracks consist of odd grindcore experiments (imagine early Napalm Death with keyboards and alto sax) - you will either love or hate it.

This double album was previously released as Soft Cell Live and it's a total corker. Culled from several different gigs on their superb comeback tour in 2002, it amply demonstrates just a formidable song-writing team Ball and Almond were. I was honoured to see them twice on this tour and they didn't disappoint. The range of the material covers all of their short but varied career and includes their (then current) album Cruelty Without Beauty. There are so many highlights but certain songs stand out for me: the opening Memorabilia with its wicked three-note bassline, Last Chance which they described as being a sequel to Say Hello Wave Goodbye and Tainted Love. I saw them live twice on the tour featured and can honestly say that they are truly superb live. As a diehard Cellmate from 1981, I'd often hankered after seeing them so I was determined not to miss them when they reformed at last. This is one of the very few live albums I've ever heard that really does justice to the atmosphere of the gigs. There's a perfect balance on some tracks - notably Bedsitter and Say Hello Wave Goodbye - between Marc willing the crowd on and the audience genuinelly responding with heartfelt emotion and pure joy.
