Bobbie Gentry is without doubt one of the most underrated female artists in the rock era being one of the true pioneers of the singer-songwriter genre. She only produced a handful of albums in her career spanning the years 1967-71. These have never been re-released bar some recent Australian (and thus expensive) twofers but she has had compilations galore each packaging up a selection of her tracks including the recognised hits together with lesser known items without ever managing to convey the full range of her artistry. The best of an unsatisfactory bunch is probably the Australian Raven compilation, "An American Quilt" which is a 26 track single CD which does an OK job considering the running time limitations but due to its point of origin ... Raven are really on the ball in the reissue of the bobbie Gentry back catalouge.Two more excellent albums on 1 disc.These were Bobbies last two albums released in 1970 and 1971,first was Fancy or as it was issued in the UK under the title "I'll never fall in love again"and included two tracks not on the USA release,"In the ghetto and Billy the kid",this is an excellent album with cover versions and Bobbies own mixing pop,rock and soul,the Patchwork album was Bobbies own and delves back to her roots with amore country/folk feel and includes some superb material,alll in all these two albums show Bobbie in top form and show why she is rememberedbwith such love.To complete the reissue programe we now need"Touch'em with love" and "Bobbie Gentry and Glen ... Away from the hit singles and the UK variety show most Brits remember ger for, Bobbie Gentry had the voice to become of the great soul singers. This album showcases a side of Bobbie that may have passed you by. Naturally, "Ode to Billie Joe" is here, as is her UK No 1, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again, but elsewhere you can pick up on a fabulous Southern soul sound that demands your attention. A quick listen to "Mississippi Delta", "Find Em, Fool Em, Forget About Em" or the Reba McEntire revived "Fancy" and you're off into a world of fabulous storytelling and sublime singing.

Thankfully the 80s hair metal duel is excluded from this album. Cooder's slide at the beginning of the duel is great, but the song then descends into something more suited to 'This is Spinal Tap'. The soundtrack contains an interesting take on Robert Johnson's 'Crossroads', a haunting version of Lenoir's 'Down in Mississippi', the awesome 'Nitty Gritty Mississippi', great slide on 'Feeling Bad Blues' and 'Walking Away Blues', and wonderful gospel vocals on 'Somebody's Callin' My Name'.

Jeannie couldn't handle fame and stardom, which is a pity. Had she been able to, she might have had a much longer career. This is the strongest available collection of her music. Harper Valley PTA is a classic story song of a type which used to be much more common in country music than it is now. It's writer, Tom T Hall, made a career out of story songs (and every true country fan should have some of his music). Jeannie didn't record anything else quite like Harper Valley - the nearest she came was with The girl most likely, but she recorded many excellent songs. This compilation contains all her important country and pop hits, plus many other excellent songs, nearly all originals, but with nice covers of Before the next teardrop falls ... Read More:
