CD Collections of film music are largely covers collections, which are oftentimes disappointing, mostly due to the inability of some synthesizer guru to capture the complexity of the inherent dynamics of soundtrack music. Even if a genuine orchestra takes up the challenge, the result is more often than not shallow and uninspiring.

This collection, however, was in many ways a pleasant surprise. Not only does the Prague Philharmonic manage to produce the emotional depth, but they also add various instruments where required - from harmonicas to boys choirs, from organ to electric guitar (where needed). Some bits are real goosebumps, like their rendition of the Godfather theme "Speak softly, love". Even the 20st Centruy fox theme sparkles ... Read More:

Self-expression for the mute lead character from the film can only be made through writing or playing on her beloved piano. And how she plays! The whole point of the film would be missed without the gift of Nyman's musical composition. Sadness, joy and bewilderment are constant themes of the music, cleverly woven together. If you have imagination, you might not need to see the film, just listen to the music.

I had this film on video tape, and it has been watched, and loaned out to friends so many times, it's worn out. So, I had to but the DVD!!!!!!!!!!!
The special edition DVD is fascinating because if you already love the film, you are given an insight into the mind of the writer. I also loved watching the interview with the composer, being a keen piano player. The film is quite dark, dramatic and moody and the music is beautiful, matching perfectly the whole feel of the movie. Oh, and Holly Hunter actually plays the piano! Buy it!You won't be disappointed.

The 40 tracks on this 3 CD box set cover many of the most popular and memorable pieces of music written for (or used in) films.

There is a good selection here, ranging from the emotional `Hymn to the Fallen' (Saving Private Ryan) to the dramatic `Pirates of the Caribbean'.

A slight word of warning, the collection is a mixture of original recordings (the music that was actually used in the film) and re-recordings by various orchestras. One such example is the Gladiator `Suite' which although may be the version regularly played on Classic FM radio it is noticeably different to the original, and for me falls disappointingly short of that used in the film.

For many though this will not matter, and the dedicated ... Read More:
