This set captures such excellent, vivid and clear performances that the story leaps out by just listening. You won't really even need to follow the printed libretto. Every single character is perfectly sung and the orchestra and conductor are in top form. The whole thing brims with wit and charm making it very very enjoyable. I have listened to it several times already.

Well, it depends what you want from a Rake whether this is the recording for you. Conducting, orchestra and some of the cast are superb. Sarah Walker's Baba is the best you'll find and Sam Ramey is in fine, though rather inexpressive voice as Shadow. Terfel is by far the more interesting interpreter but his voice either shouts or whispers with nothing in-between. His interpretation is unrealistic theatrically too and makes his difficult to bear repeated listening. I don't warm to Pope's rather lumpy Anne on this recording and she doesn't compare to Upshaw's glorious singing for Nagano but still better than the undernourished sound of York for Gardener. Langridge sings beautifully often, strains at other times (there is no rake who doesn't), ... Read More:

The magic of Sutherland remains despite a truly awful recording which has been poorly mastered. The strings are thin and coughing from the audience detracts from what was a wonderful performance by artiste & ensemble. One may even detect the scene shifters at their work. The pity is that, with modern technology, this piece could be reworked into the masterpiece which it rightfully should be. Dave Upton

In 1950s Britain, three male stars who recorded for US Columbia were known as the Big Three: Frankie Laine, Guy Mitchell and Johnnie Ray. Each had his own unique style that wowed record buyers. Ray was known as the Cry Guy, because his dramatic and emotional delivery was so intense it would reduce himself and the listener to tears - hence the title, 'Hysteria'. Before this set, you had two main choices: the 'Best of' on Sony that covered most of the big hits and missed out a few minor ones, but had a few other noteworthy recordings, or if you are a really big fan there's the very costly Bear Family boxsets. That has all changed, because if you want more than a 1CD compilation, but don't want to splash out on a deluxe boxset, this is ideal for ... Read More:
