I believed that, without saxman David Jackson, VDGG in this trio format would be below their standards, but i was wrong. Most of the songs are great, really. Banton`s organ sounds incredible, Hammill still sings devastatingly deep and guy evan`s drums are as intelligent and as ever. Really one of the most underrated drummers in rock.
Not to mention Banton, absolutely original organist. If you like his style, listen to classical composer Olivier Messiaen organ works, obscure and magnificent too. Not rock at all but spine chilling.

Most of The compositions are very well constructed with intricate tempos and deep moods. This cd is full of energy and VDGG fans will be delighted. I consider it way better than Presence. You will ... Read More:

I have been trying to find this CD for a few years now. I even tried ordering it on amazon.com U.S. and it was out of stock. So I tried amazon U.K. and their it was. I can't wait to add this CD to my collection. The first time that I heard of these guys was in 1981 /82 on the radio. It was the Mr. Magic Rap Attack show on 107.5 WBLS in NY. I would stay up late and record the show. It was the bomb back then. It's funny how back in the day you could only hear rap/hip hop music at 12:00 am on saturday night for only an hour. My, my, haven't we come a long way.

This recording of THE GONDOLIERS comes from 1960 when the old D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was at the height of it's post-war powers. This was also one of the first recordings of what was to become affectionatly known as the 'DECCA 2nd Series', first series having begun in 1949 with TRIAL BY JURY and ended in 1955 with PRINCESS IDA.

THE GONDOLIERS was also one of four recordings in this series to include complete dialogue, something that would spark endless debate. Some wanted the full dialogue with all recordings, some wanted none. I personally would say that Gilbert and Sullivan sparked off each other and as we want to hear every note of Sullivan we should hear every word of Gilbert. After all we expect ever word, spoken or sung, in ... Read More:

This box is worth its price just for the five talks. Bernstein at this stage had a style rather more stilted than the chatty sage of later years, but the combination of authority, insight and infectious enthusiasm is unique. Practically anyone could enjoy and learn from these analyses - they're entertaining and engrossing, without a whiff of down-dumbing. When the classical and the popular cross over nowadays, the results are usually compromised and crass, but I don't think Bernstein even recognised a gap to be crossed over. We need his all-embracing talent and vision today more than ever.

Then there are the performances. I'm not the biggest fan of mono symphonic recordings, but these positively leap down your ears, unmannered, ... Read More:
