Even though I usually stick to the coasts, I'll always have a place in my heart for Michigan -- I was born there, after all.

It also happens to be the first album in Sufjan Stevens' proposed fifty-state-album project, "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State." Stevens' mellow indie-folk rules the album with a gentle hand, from sprightly folkpop to banjo balladry -- and it's as fun as it is complex and alluring.

It opens with a gentle piano, joined in by a chorus of horns. "It's the same outside/Driving to the riverside/I pretend to cry/Even if I cried alone," Stevens murmurs, embodying a worker who isn't working. Despite its simplicity, it's packed with self-trickery and windy dissatisfaction. "I forgot ... Read More:

This is the first in a new series of Classic Rock endorsed albums that focuses on different genres within the history and rich tapestry of rock music. Across 2 CDs and 27 tracks featuring artists include Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Rush, Marillion, Yes, Spirit, Argent, Caravan, Atomic Rooster, Traffic, Procol Harum, Colosseum, Focus, Curved Air, Rare Bird, Steve Hackett, Renaissance, Family, Van Der Graaf Generator, Barclay James Harvest, The Nice, IQ, Twelfth Night and Blue Oyster Cult (?), this is a spirited attempt to cover a bewildering and wide ranging genre.

Few of the acts dubbed prog had much in common musically, beyond a refusal to constrain themselves to tradtiional forms of song, so any attempt to claim ... Read More:

This is a great introduction to the wonders of '70's rock . Most of the top bands from the era make an appearance and for a change not with all the usual songs , so Deep Purple have Fireball instead of Smoke on the flippin' water , Focus have House of the king (theme from "Saxondale" for you youngsters) rather then the obligatory Hocus Pocus, Hawkwind have Hury on Sundown and not Silver Machine, etc . Any album that includes Curved air, Argent,Nazareth and Be Bop Deluxe (all of whom are usually overlooked on these compilations) has got to be worth your money. minus two stars for the uninspired selection of Paranoid for the hundred and ninetieth time but plus one for the inclusion of Apache dropout. An excellent compilation for anyone with even a passing ... Read More:

This is one of the only electronica albums I have bought and enjoyed from beginning to end, it just doesn't let up. Soulwax are masters of the remix, highlights for me are Klaxon's Gravity's Rainbow, Justice's Phantom Pt.II and Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out Of My Head... but all of them are a stroke of genius.

If you want something to lift a party, get this you won't be disappointed!

As ever, this album is a mix of covers and original, although here most of the covers are included in the excellent four-part Blues medley, which pays tribute to some of Hank's heroes in that genre of music including Lightning Hopkins and Elmore Jones. There are just two other covers – Wild and blue (a then-recent country hit for John Anderson) and Promises (Eric Clapton), both of which are well suited to Hank's style.

Most of Hank's albums from the eighties contain at least one song in which Hank really lets you know about life as he sees it - and several such songs were later compiled together on America the way I see it. On this album you get Mr Lincoln, in which Hank wishes that the great man could come to save America. Attitude adjustment sounds ... Read More:
