Once again Johnny Cash recordings have been repackaged since he died. Welcome as the full (audio) concert is the DVD only shows the Granada TV documentary (and this doesn't look as if it's been restored) - so where is the full video concert? Surely Granada filmed more 'complete' songs, or the whole concert and more?? Where is the extra footage out-takes from the original documentary? Or is all this going to be released as the "Deluxe Complete At San Quentin" ?? Since 1969 I've bought this four times! - on vinyl, on CD on so-called extended version on CD and now this 3 disc version. When are record companies going to take Johnny Cash seriously? Only three stars as Johnny Cash's legacy and his fans deserve more respect. ... Read More:

This superb and comprehensive edition contains quite number of unreleased performances by Carl Perkins, Statler Brothers, Carter Sister and also by Man in Black, and is ultimate release of legendary concert,even without amazing DVD. Desing and package are top notch. Audio cd's have very good sound and 3 great solo performances by Perkins (outstanding instrumental 'Outside looking in') and Statler Brothers with 'Flowers on the wall' and ' Less of me' done great job too, but Carter Sisters don't sound so good as expected on their solo parts. This is a superb live album, recorded in San Quentin prison in front of an enthusiastic crowd of criminal inmates (now that's what you call a tough crowd !!).The songs are just brilliant & Cash's banter is almost worth the price of the CD itself. Johnny Cash plays the crowd like he plays the guitar, one minute whipping them into a near frenzy with songs like the fantastic title track , the next calming them down with some reflective melodies. I only fairly recently bought the two Johnny Cash "prison" albums , on the strength of having seen his performance of this particular concert on TV - unfortunately, I didn't know this edition of "At San Quentin", complete with DVD, was available (that'll teach me to look more carefully !). ... Most people know about this album and rightly so, as Cash really delivers somthing special here. Throughout the recording not only does Cash perform his songs exactly as you would expect but his personality really shines as he banters with the prison inmates. It is clear from this album alone why Johnny Cash was so popular with all sorts of people. In between songs he jokes around, tells brief stories and, most importantly, connects with his audience. You can tell he has their full support all the way as they cheer and clap during just about every song. I ordered this set after seeing it advertised in an email from Amazon. I was not very familiar with Johnny Cash, with the exception of Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire. This double CD really has blown me away. Cash's voice is great but the entertainment comes as much from his banter with the prisoners as from the songs, many of which have jail themes. All in all a great showcase for a natural performer. The sound quality is also excellent demonstrating better stereo effects than many modern albums.
