I agree with the last reviewer, Shona Laing should have gotten a much better deal with this masterpiece. I've pretty much found everything she's done over the past 20 years or more, still looking for her more obscure collections. "South" was brilliant from start to finish. Lovely, melancholy vocalist with strong songwriting skills and a true vision and voice for this world. The 1980's was a hard time and place to truly shine as a writer, it was so much about the hair and clothes and attitude of the artist but there was still many outstanding acts that squeaked through, (SOUTH) being one of them, with her message lyrics backed by a great sound. Then And Now came out on Ace's Kent label in 1994 and, as the title implies, drew from Mary Love's recording career from its beginnings in 1965 to the present, two of the tracks, Because Of You and Grace, being tasters from a forthcoming album. Mary Love grew up singing in churches in Los Angeles and got her start recording demos for the producer Marc Gordon. This led to her getting signed by the Bihari brothers to the Modern label, whose select soul roster included Ike and Tina Turner, the Ikettes and Z Z Hill. this is a fair collection of hits if very short, i dont understand why a single diana ross song was put on this cd (imagine) it stands out as the odd one out. iam sure as we all know there are plenty of other hit that could have been put on instead plus a few more. it still has great songs and all sung well. the black and white photo for the front cover is worth the cd on its own' great pic of the girls.
