I cannot believe this doesn`t have a review. Who am I to give a review of this and Menhuin? It`s either Jascha Heifetz or Menhuin that seem to top the best 20th Violinist on record and this is Menhuin whose legendary recordings and interpretation of Bach is set out here for one to listen to online! Suberb. Be careful...LISTEN CAREFULLY.....don`t be a victim of 21st C post modern cerebral whitewashing and be in orbit to the shallow.. and don`t be swayed too much by the cleaner digital recording of 21st C interpretations. THIS is real class.. and it is a good quality recording from EMI as you would expect. Alot of music here as well for your money. This HAS to be a treasured collection for anybody. This CD features three of the great twentieth century British works. It begins with Walton's Violin Concerto which, written in 1939 and revised in 1943, is serenely indifferent to its historical context. (In fact, much of it was written in the south of Italy and, certainly, its ethereal atmosphere is more suggestive of the Mediterranean than the blackout.) As for the maverick soloist Nigel Kennedy, this piece is in many ways an ideal vehicle for him to display his talents. The second movement in particular, 'Presto capriccioso alla napolitana', makes huge demands on technical virtuosity. Kennedy is almost unfailingly accurate with intonation in the higher registers.
