What stark contrast to our overheated western 24x7 world! Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli consort have really delivered an astonishing disc. This is not about some bible-like paradise, but the tranquil paradise within ourselves, which has become blurred by day-to-day stress. When this music enters your brain through your headphones, you suddenly realize again the importance of the willingness to focus on peace and quiet. Its effect is comparable to that of transcendental meditation. And this CD also proves that timeless music is made in EVERY decade, as well as in the 1550's as in the 1990's... this CD contains gems of both periods. Wonderful.

This is a truly excellent set, and at a bargain price. I have loved Tallis's music for many years and have some dearly loved recordings by The Tallis Scholars, the Hillard Ensemble and The Taverner Consort which won't be superseded by this set, but are certainly beautifully complemented by it. The approach of Alistair Dixon and Chapelle du Roi is calm and restrained, and the music glows as a result. The singers are very good, tuning is virtually faultless and the absence or restrained use of vibrato ideal. The overall sound is very warm, by and large, emphasised by resonant acoustics in all the recording venues, and this eight-year project is a very fine achievement which does real justice to one of England's greatest composers.

This is, of course, a reissue of the Signum Classics set with the notes and texts on a CD Rom but costing a third of the price of the original issue!

The music is superb, the recording accoustic perfectly judged, and the performances absolutely first class. Alistair Dixon's direction is ideal. The music is allowed to breathe, is never forced, and the polyphony made absolutely clear - even in the 40 part motet 'Spem in Alium'. One might argue that the performances are slightly 'cool' and lacking in emotion but I think this is good thing. Tallis' music is intensely spiritual and loses some of its transcendal beauty when performed in a romantic way.

I cannot praise this set too highly. Tallis is one of the greatest of ... Read More:

As a fervent atheist, I was move greatly by the sheer depth of devotion reflected in this music. A conversation of a profound nature is started across the short chasm of four and a half centuries.
I was exposed to later choral music as a schoolboy (particularly Byrd- Tallis' protege) but never felt so overwelmed.
Other recordings may be technically superior, but this is great value.

Amazon continues to show a "couldn't care less attitude towards the information it provides customers in respect of SACD titles, which is extraordinary given there are over 4,000 SACD titles listed on the site. They fail to indicate whether a disc is stereo or multichannel, which assists in knowing exactly what you are buying. Perhaps more importantly they mislead potential buyers by indicating on every SACD listing that SACD compatible equipment is required. This is true for single layer SACD discs, but is totally misleading for hybrid discs which have a cd layer and is therefore playable on any regualar cd player. Amazon does need to look very closely at its descriptions and as the contributor above indicates what is the point of customer feedback ... Read More:
