Fauré is perfectly at ease in this Requiem in that extremely agitated period of 1900, agitated by the industrial revolution or by the social war going on in the mines and the big factories. This world cut in two with the haves on one hand and the have-nots on the other, and the tremendous violence between them, between those who had paradise on earth and those who only had paradise beyond death, and death is flattening all differences into some long walk or long march to that beyond no word in no language is able to name, let alone describe. Fauré tried then with his music to take us from the riches of Madeleine's church in Paris to the soul-breaking death, that door to a somewhere that is nowhere in our knowledge. Soft, deep, somber, lurking ... Read More:

It's easy to get swept along in the usual hysteria of Tchaikovsky's turbulent 4th Symphony, but Celi's thoughful, more deliberate manner made me more sympathetic to the sense of near permanent frenzy that is a hallmark of Russian music and literature (e.g. Dostoyevsky) in this period.

The Milhaud Concerto for Marimba is wonderfully trippy, the Wagner excerpts quite impressive, the Mozart Requiem very grand, the Faure Requiem quite touching. Celi's Scheherazade is very imposing and very beautiful, whilst the Prokofiev and Shostakovich symphonies are stripped of their violent and politicised trappings, perhaps to their detriment. The Verdi is fascinating but exhausting, the Bach interminable.

In addition to all these big ... Read More:

This set of six CDs is supposed to take us through the music of the Middle Ages from before Gregorian Chant to the Renaissance, but also from Byzantium to England, from the Mozarabic and Christian Iberian Peninsula to Germany. Note the Slavonic, Scandinavian and Irish traditions are missing. In fact the orthodox tradition is practically absent. These CDs insist on the fact that Gregorian music is derived or invented from traditions coming from the Middle East, what has become in the 7th and subsequent centuries Islam, or part of Islam, via Byzantium and Mozarabic Spain. But that is not enough again. The Hebraic tradition is strangely absent and with it the connection to Sumerian and old Indo-Iranian traditions that are totally absent. It also neglects ...
