This is unlike any other recording I have heard - and a very good re-creation of the live performance. Even if you don't like religious music, this will still thrill and excite. The mixture of 'traditional' choir with modern instruments and the weird and wonderful recordings from Africa is still innovative, challenging and wonderfully affirmative.

Note the Slavonic, Scandinavian and Irish traditions are missing. In fact the orthodox tradition is practically absent. Janacek's music is extremely post-stravinskian with yet a constant reference to an old Slavonic tradition. The introduction is powerfully dominated by the wind instruments but is kind of dubitative, suspended, sad even, unsure for sure. The Kyrie reestablishes vibrant optimism. The soprano takes us into this mood and when the Gloria comes, neurotic, escaping an invisible and un-understandable danger, when it turns into a chase or maybe a procession rhythmically pushed forward by percussions and strings, we try to forget the choir that sounds more menacing than the solace of a great mass of helpful souls. The Credo then explodes like a confrontation to the impossible conquest of the faith and fate a Christian would like to have and control. In front of ... Read More:

This release is a combined release of Schreier's Requiem and Coronation Mass (plus the Ave Verum Corpus). It is amazing that the two pieces of great conducting by Schreier are now being combined in a single CD album, since each work is top-notch all by its own. I think there are previous reviews on these two works (both 5-stars, no less), and I really could not find new words to comment on the performances. Just a gut reaction on the present combination - the Requiem and the Coronation Mass present two very different facets of Mozart's sacred compositions.
