This opera is full of glorious music which is what we expect from Tchaikovsky. The story is excellent and the music makes it all the more exciting. Theres is a real sense of suspense building through the opera climaxing in the death of Herman. Once again the Kirov gives an absolutely fantastic performance, with Gegan Grigorian giving a very expressive Herman. The rest of the casting is fautless and the orchestral playing is just phenomenal. Valery Gergiev is a god in the world of opera conducting.

I must say firstly opera is not my thing, but I do enjoy Prokofiev

I have heard better in terms of recording quality, and the levels seemed a little unbalanced. That said, the emotion comes through, and the performances are all of a good quality.

I bought this on the back of having enjoyed a large bulk of his works, and the choral pieces in other works in particular. The work did not match my hopes, but did perhaps show me another element of Prokofiev that I had not seen.

Opera buffs may well enjoy this, but anyone looking on the back of his other works may want to give a miss if they have not experienced other opera's previously.

I didn't think this would be 'my kind' of opera - I usually prefer something more lyrical. This is just one of the most fantastic, disturbing, challenging, exhilarating, exhausting things I've ever listened to. Gorchakova is absolutely breath-taking, in fact it could almost be distracting, to sit and wonder how on earth she manages it all. The final scene in the convent is just beyond words, I felt like I was sitting jaw-dropped for a long time afterwards. It will be a long time before I listen to this opera again, not because I didn't like it but because it is such a profound experience. Phew!

This is a box set of the Mahler cycle Sinopoli recorded for DG with the Philharmonia back in the 1980's (at about the same time that Maazel was recording his cycle with the VPO).

Production values are high - the set is well-recorded and generally well-played/sung (though rehersal times were reputedly quite tight). Sinopoli was a unique conductor, he would often take an 'independent' line, and his recordings, at their best, quite often bring out details that others don't. Never as 'passionate' as Bernstein or Inbal (or indeed Abbado in later years), never as 'reserved' as Bertini, Sinopoli produced Mahler that could still be revealing and intellectual. Brigitte Fassbaender's contribution to the Resurrection and Songs of a Wayfarer ... Read More:

This marvellous Mozart opera, with possibly only one "dud" number in it and a vaudeville finale, seems to have been in production in many recording studios in the 1950s. In Vienna a recording was in charge of Josef Krips, in London Beecham was preparing his inimitable version, and in Berlin Ferenc Fricsay was the conductor in this DGG recording. Each recording has been reissued and remastered, and of them all I have come to prefer this one.

While Fricsay's direction has many strengths and almost no weaknesses, and while the cast has no weaknesses at all, it is principally the quality of the recording and the remastering that wins me over. The clarity and glow on the sound spectrum is outstanding for a recording of 1954 vintage. ... Read More:

I bought this recording on the strength of other recordings I had heard from this label. However, I was disappointed. The age of the recording really does show. I am aware that it has been remastered but somehow the sound is still fighting its way through some foreground noise, exactly what I am not sure. It lacks the clarity I have heard from other recordings, like the superb Gardiner effort. Possibly it was the style 30 years ago, but I also thought that the singing, particularly the showcase arias of the queen, were ruined by the sort of coy vibrarto that one associates with 40s music hall. This is considered a classic recording, but I found the whole production laboured. For those of you out there who have yet to buy a copy of the magic flute ... Read More:
