great rag bag of unreleased stuff from a meastro. Some live, some studio, but all interesting. Recommended

Haven't yet heard this particular CD so can't comment on quality of transfers but I can say that this selection of Duke/Peacock sides all but duplicates the excellent (and now unobtainable) compilation Black Gospel, a tie-in with Viv Broughton's 1985 book of the same name. The only significant omissions are two early 60s sides from Duke/Peacock subsidiary Songbird: Inez Andrews' I'm Glad About It and In the Need of Prayer. This is a great pity as those are classic tracks, but for a low price (on Marketplace at the time of writing) you still get a hefty slice of golden age gospel including the Sensational Nightingales' Burying Ground, complete with Julius Cheeks shredding his vocal chords as you listen.
