As regular patrons to West End shows we have to say this one flies high above the others. The lead performances are superb, with Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee making the characters of Mary and Bert their own. Particular praise must go to Jenny Galloway for her warm hearted yet bombastic Mrs Brill, the house keeper, comic timing of the hightest degree. There are numerous new songs as well as new treatments of the film classics, the complete package is a work of brilliance. The direction, choreography, orchestrations and set were top notch, the only slight criticism in the show was the sound. Musical Director, Nick Davies, conducts the show with great sensitivity. I bought this CD for my daughter, who at 9 has become probably the third generation to be entranced by the excellent music written for the film adaptation of Mary Poppins, which considering it was released in 1964 has shown astonishing longevity. The majority of these songs sound remarkably fresh, aided in particular by the vivacity of Julie Andrews (a performer born to play this role, even though her character in the film is very different to the book!) With the possible exceptions of My Fair Lady and West Side Story, few musicals have really been able to sustain the quality of material, but the gathering here of songs like A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Feed the Birds, Fly a Kite, Chim Chim Cher-ee and ... I bought this album almost 3 years ago. I was quite fond of it but alas, my experience of music was very limited at the time. I listened to this album just now for the first time in probably a year. It was okay, but it is too easy to spot the influences - Faith No More, Deftones, Rage Against The Machine and Korn (I don't even have any Korn albums but I can still recognise various Korn guitar sounds). This type of thing has been done much better before. The lyrics are pretty poor as well. Standard rebellious stuff; lyrics which tell you to rebel but not what to rebel against "Right the wrong." The album drags on for too long, it could have done with having tracks 12 and 13 cut. Having said that, there are some good riffs here ... Read More:

Full Orchestral backing track - lovely sound which matches the original film music. I use these with my singing pupils and my children and would rate this at Moderate difficulty. Words are included in a small print leaflet. Synthetic notes quietly pick out the tune to help you know when to sing and when to pause (easy to hear against the much nicer sound of the orchestra but quickly covered over by real vocals once you've learned the song). From reading reviews of other 'karaoke' tracks it might help to point out that this is a CD not a DVD and therefore doesn't have words coming up on screen. Personally, I would call this backing tracks not 'karaoke' for that reason.

This CD pack is alright to listen to and if you like a little bit of karoke then the second disc will please you as it is just the music to 14 of the song on the first CD all the words are in the book. in order. Most people will just listen to the first CD and sing along to the songs with the oringinal cast voices as a guide which is easier than following the music. I think this CD has something for everyone people who like to listen, People who like to sing, and both combined and also something for Disney fans some song are from Disney films but still a great CD.
