These recordings, along with his Bruckner, are well known recordings of Mahler for a long time. This CD conversion sounds better (to me) than their first issues, especially on the 3rd. Wished that this set has 1972 recording of the 1st (420 080-2 PH) instead of 1963. 1972 version is much better.

Yesterday, on the 6th of March, I bought the new M8 by the renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra. What can I say? IMHO, this is the one! Not the one and only...but still...This masterpiece with 8 soloists, extended orchestral forces and with the duration of more than 82 minutes, really cannot be expected to be completely flawless. However, besides from a few minor drawbacks that one may have concerning the tempi (that here and there are on the slower side), I would be surprised if you will NOT be amazed. In this recording, you will find brilliant playing, absolutely superb sound, magnificent choirs and a perfect mix between blasting fire and calm subtleness.

I would not suggest that it should replace your favorite 8th, but you most certainly ... Read More:

This is a box set of the Mahler cycle Sinopoli recorded for DG with the Philharmonia back in the 1980's (at about the same time that Maazel was recording his cycle with the VPO).

Production values are high - the set is well-recorded and generally well-played/sung (though rehersal times were reputedly quite tight). Sinopoli was a unique conductor, he would often take an 'independent' line, and his recordings, at their best, quite often bring out details that others don't. Never as 'passionate' as Bernstein or Inbal (or indeed Abbado in later years), never as 'reserved' as Bertini, Sinopoli produced Mahler that could still be revealing and intellectual. Brigitte Fassbaender's contribution to the Resurrection and Songs of a Wayfarer is divine. ... Read More:

As a kid I had the cassette recordings of the 2nd & 5th symphonies recorded in 1983. They are mind blowing. For me, absoloutely the most incredible interpretations from Solti and the Chicago Symphony. Also the engineering on these recordings is far superior to any other set.

I'm delighted to find the full works in this boxed set. I wholly recommend above any other orchestra/maestro or engineering setup.

Enjoy! James Sykes, Swindon, England.

Gustav Mahler composed this extraordinary work in only six weeks during the summer of 1906. Standing alongside his monumental 9th Symphony which he composed the following year, it remains one of THE symphonies of the 20thC. The work is broken down into two movements; Veni, Creator Spiritus, and the closing scene Part II from Goethe's Faust. Despite two rather different movements, they both work superbly. After listening to this version since I first purchased it during the spring of 1973, I still consider it to be the best currently available. Of course, other listeners will have their own favourites, and I would imagine Klaus Tennstedt's version recorded with the London Philharmonic wouldnt be far behind as regarding performance and sound.
