I have been fascinated by these little plants ever since I was a little boy and was keen to learn more about them from these great little book. There has been such an upturn in sales of these plants that now they are being bred with varying shades of red on the pads. Some of them even being purple. It was interesting to find out that the plant although designed by nature to catch insects does not actually need to do so to survive. In its native habitat it lives in very boggy ground. It's quite bulky and took a few attempts to set it up as if not done correctly the slightest move sets it off, but overall it is a good live trap. I think it would be better if it could set up not to close so the wild rat can get used to it over a period of days, then when they're not expecting it you can set it up to catch them. It's designed so you cannot get bitten and works well, and needs to be checked daily but I found I could attach a water bottle on the side of it. Great for catching escaped pets as I found out, especally when it's in a huge pet store. The rat was caught first time and was unharmed.

I have been using the trap for about a month and I kept finding it shut but with the bait gone. I then finally saw the squirrel enter it once and the trap closing on its back. It then proceeded to take one of the nuts I had left and back out of the trap. The problem is that it is simply too small for a fully grown squirrel, it is not spring loaded and only relies on gravity to close the trap door. The door then does not lock shut until fully closed. Completely useless for anything bigger than a mouse (though I have once caught a small black bird, believe it or not!).
