It seems that with each 'improvement' in the Mavis Beacon series, users are less and less able to customise the product! In this useless version, I found to my horror that I couldn't customise the product to accept a British layout keyboard! I tried to contact Broderbund, the otiose company that puts out this rubbish, but the one thing that their web site's Contact Us page doesn't do, is provide an email address, or telephone number! I bought this product because I had bought an earlier version of Mavis Beacon (version 12) from Broderbund online, but because I'd had to reinstall my operating system, I had apparently lost my right to use the product because the registration key stopped working!!! I used Version 8 on Windows 95 to teach myself to type in the late 90s. Then I thought it was great. It was a big help. This version I expected to be more polished. Perhaps more scientific in it's approach; though really it hasn't changed much. Still good. Purchased for my neice, installation hung on her XP machine during install/registration. Ctrl+Alt+Delete showed registration and installation to behave as two seperate applications. Killed registration and the installation proceeded. The first thing I noticed was that the interface didn't scale well to a widescreen resolution of 1680 x 1050 some jumbled text in the options dialogue. I learned to touch type on Mavis Beacon. Sadly the CD-ROM from Windows 95 is not compatible with Windows XP, so when I upgraded my computer I had to buy it again. Guess what-I've now got a laptop with windows Vista-and it's not compatible either!I will not buy it again! The program really works-I was up to 30wpm in a couple of weeks, and it's easy to do a quick refresher at the PC when you have a few minutes. Watch out though-if you are planning to change systems/computers, the CD will become useless!

This course has one major problem. Once a series of lessons is started it MUST be fully completed. There is no facility to stop and save which is extremely frustrating. This means repeating the same work over and over again. If you e-mail the company they will send a patch to allow saving. Otherwise the units are well constructed and the games are fun. My son enjoyed the work and the problem can be resolved.

I'm giving this 5 stars because versions 8 and 9 between them have saved me so much time and money, but I can fully appreciate its limitations for other people. What works really really well, is dictating a long report into a digital recorder, transferring the sound file to the PC, and then leaving Dragon to get on with transcribing it into Word, which on a good PC will be at about 250wpm. I'd say the accuracy on this basis really is 99% at the very least, and this using onboard sound rather than an additional sound card. Otherwise, my experience has been that: Minijack microphones just don't work. I've been using this product to help with my academic writing. I'm amazed at how accurate the recognition software is and how it remembers and improves the more you use it. I now dictate everything and correct any mistakes when I do a readthrough and edit what I did wrote, which I always did when typing anyway so it's no extra work. I would recommend anyone who does a lot of typing to try this software. The only gripe is the headset which is a bit low quality and quite painful after a while, typically I could work 2 hours at a go after which my head hurt. I bought a more comfortable set (less than £10) but the ear pads made my ears overheat. In the end I butchered the original headset and adapted the microphone to sit on my desk. After running the ...
