Several of the reviews on here are not for The Haunted Carousel but are for other Nancy Drew games. My nine year old found this quite easy compared to other ND games and not as good as Treasure in the Royal Tower or Message in a Haunted Mansion. The Second Chance option is useful at the very end. Saving your game regularly is also recommended.

Just to let anyone know who is interested, this CD-Rom does work on Mac. I have a recent Mac, and when I put the disk in, my OS 9 system kicks in. It works without any problems. As far as the game itself, I was very pleased and have not found any difficulty in understanding how it works, but I suppose instructions would no be a bad idea! We are using this CD to help my son, who has never been to school in England, and I find that this is a very effective way to work on his grammer, etc. He is not a big reader, like his brother, so this game has been a very helpful tool. I bought this software for my daughter who is very computer literate for her age. She happily worked her way through all of the Jump Ahead Year 1 series from Focus Multimedia Ltd and thoroughly enjoyed them. More importantly, she clearly learned a lot too. Perhaps it was because I was expecting the same level of engagement and explanation from Play and Learn: Science Experiments that I felt a little disappointed. The experiments simply aren't that engaging. Sure, they look good, but they don't actually explain very much. I got the CD for my daughters last Christmas, who are being brought up in Greece but who have been exposed to English since birth, due to having an English grandmother. My 7-year-old can now complete all tasks at level 3 (the hardest)and still loves to play. My 5-year-old really enjoys playing the easier levels and it's always a mad dash between them for the computer! I am now going to order the next two, since the CD has really helped them with recognizing letters, numbers, matching, phonics etc.

It is a good chess game, but very straight for kids. It has tutorials, and when chess pieces attack it is all about cartoons, and about no bloods, no violence. Very nice for kids under 10 only. It is not a war chess at all.

It seems that the software must have been updated since the last review, because although the Amazon listing doesn't say so (or the box for that matter!) it now runs automatically on XP as well, without having to change any settings or anything at all! I have bought loads of different cd-roms for my little boy who's now nearly 5 and have encountered numerous problems, but this program is really good! We have experienced issues with the software from Dorling Kindersley, but these cd's run without problems, also on XP. The games are challenging enough to keep him interested, but still learning through play, so that he doesn't lose his patience as he has done with others. I brought this software especially for my 4 year old daughter who is struggling with her phonics in school and was very disappointed with the letters game which is NOT sounded out in phonics. This is confusing for children and misleading as it does state it teaches phonics. The rest of the games are OK, but both of my children (3 & 4) got bored of it quickly. It is very reasonably priced, but in my view not worth buying.
