I've used Photoshop for years, and although Adobe are pushing this as their biggest update yet, I don't agree. From beta testing reviews, there are some gorgeous new features, like GPU acceleration for some things, and context-sensitive resizing, but I gather most of the update has happened behind the scenes and the user won't see as much new as they may be expecting. I would shop around, too. Photoshop Extended CS4 is only £887.12 (full, not upgrade) from Adobe's own UK store, and Amazon are trying to sell it for almost a grand! If you have an old copy, you would do well on the upgrade pricing.

I recently bought myself a Macbook, and decided that I needed some quality editing software to go with it. Being a photographer, I opted for Photoshop Elements, as I've heard good reviews about it in the past, and can't afford the full blown Photoshop [ plus, I refuse to download it illegally! ]. So what's this product like? Well, it's a doddle to get onto your Mac. I did it very quickly, and it works absolutely fine. I opened it all up and shoved one of my photographs into the program so I could have a play, and instantly got very confused. To be honest, Photoshop Elements is just a more advanced version of the program I'd used in the past for my work, so I could follow some bits, but I quickly lost it. Do you have a uni undergraduate in your household. If so, get this : the mother of photo software. If you are a student why not buy it now. You can use if after you graduate in your work. Many employers these days insist that people have proper licences for software.

I have used this for a couple of years now and rely on it for all my photo needs. It is truly a fantastic program. The cataloguing function enables you to find any photo within seconds. I have approx 16,000 photos in my computer and this program has them all tagged for instant retrieval. The editing functions enable you to do pretty much anything and would be all you could want unless you are a professional. Its worth getting a book to help with the more advanced functions if you want to experiment.

I'm sure I agree with some of the comments already posted on this product, such as relocation of some of the tools (which is annoying for the first 30 mins unti you get used to it), but the improvements are well worth the upgrade. I didn't notice some of the missing features of earlier versions so I'm not sure I'd used them that much - you may or may not yourself. It can be a little clunky if your PC spec is a tad on the low side, and getting used to the new features such as graduated filter can take just a little getting used to. After v2 I'm not going back to v1.x, its great :)

Photoshop CS3 is wonderful and a real joy to use. We were not naive enough to feel it could run on an older less powerful machine. We purchased a new PC especially to run Photoshop CS3, with a lot of memory and running XP Professional, and have hardly anything else running on this machine so that other software does not clutter things up etc. CS3 loaded very easily. After installing the upgrades - 260MB - we started to use it for our day to day image processing. You download your images directly from your card into Bridge and then open them as RAW files.
