In addition to the horror stories I've heard and read about Vista, I'd also read that the Home Basic edition is basically like XP and therefore not worth getting. Though Vista may have been dis-functional in 2007, the 2008 edition of Home Basic with Service Pack 1 is anything but XP! Installation was painless and despite my motherboard manufacturer not offering Vista compatible drivers, Windows Update made easy work of finding current VGA, Network & Audio drivers to run my Motherboard under XP. I've had one program that will not function correctly but it's a specialist piece of Broadcast Software for which a Vista version is available so all in all, no major problems, catastrophe's etc etc. I think the Vista horror stories mainly relate ... I have 6 PCs one each running on 98 and 2000 and four on XP. In comparison, 98(rev B) is excellent and generally very stable but lacks some critical facilities e.g. the ability to view picture thumbnails. That said, the machine that it's on is in regular use as a word processor and does a grand job. 2000 is brilliant. Never falls over, has the ability to show thumbnails (albeit only one file at a time) and is not too hungry for resources. Let's pass over ME, that was pathetic and had more bugs than the natural history museum. The one machine that originally had ME was upgraded to XP (without any problems).

XP SP2 is, in my opinion, the Microsoft operating system most fit for purpose to date. This is written 6 months after the release ... Read More:

I got Ultimate Upgrade as an offer of £30 when buying a laptop from Amazon. Let's be clear I would not have paid the full price or anywhere near the full price, so my review is based on a purchase price of £30 only.

I have replaced my Desktop XP operating system (3 year old pc) with Vista Ultimate as the laptop came with Vista Premium, good enough for me.

I upgraded the desktop RAM from 1gb to 4gb before loading Vista Ultimate.

It is important to go to Windows Update and make sure your system is up to date before proceeding and to do the same after you have loaded Vista Ultimate, this ensures that you have all the drivers and patches needed.

The upgrade from XP on the desktop to Ultimate was pretty simple, although ... Read More:

26.Mac OS X 10.3 Panther from: Apple

I never could see the point, my G3 iMac DV SE (graphite) being just so ace when used with the final release of OS9.2. I am an ex-Unix fan, though, so I finally succumbed to the temptation of true pre-emptive multi-tasking, real multi-user simultaneous logins and real security. But it was crash-proofing that I really coveted.
And now I have them all. From what I've heard, missing out on 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2 was worth the wait, as OSX is now a mature product.
If you've never used OSX before, buy the book "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual: Panther Edition" by David Pogue at the same time. Otherwise, you will never realise all the things you can do which OS9 and PCs can't.

Having dabbled with the downloaded version and liked it, I bought this to help me understand a bit more about Linux set-up and to get a package that worked (more later) without me wondering if it was me, the hardware, or the software, that had hiccupped somewhere.

The installation is easy, (I used a empty but formatted hard drive) and you can follow the main process through with the handbook in your hand to see what is happening. The only hassles have been WiFi (despite seeing the card and the router IP adress, it doesn't want to play ball, but is fine hard wired to the router) and graphic card. Despite a driver to support my NVIDIA card, the display is not as sharp as it should be and when trying to upgrade the driver \ display, it doesn't like it. However, using the handbook ...
