I'm semiprofessional writer, and just under a year ago I started developing fairly serious repetitive strain injury. That was when I got into Dragon. It's a tool, not a gadget. Learning to speak to it takes some work, I myself only really got the hang of it after six months and some of the features still don't work for me (for example I'm still unable to navigate menus reliably). The software doesn't always recognize what you say correctly, although the fact that I have a British regional accent might not help, and there seem to be some inconsistencies in the way it applies punctuation... Bought for new Vista machine plus to update old XP laptop. Worked without a problem for both machines. As a 3-computer installation set it makes it even better value. Auto-updates work well. No conflicts with adaware. Works smoothly and easily.

Absolutely unreliable. As such clearly it could only be produced by Microsoft and they expect you to put up your hard earned money! Avoid at ANY price.

It's in the middle. I'm tired of reading these articles on how macs are vastly superior to windows based machines. if you consider that microsoft has to tailor an operating system to work on countless configurations of hardware, whereas apple mass produces the same specificiation for every set brand of computer, you may understand why windows crashes a bit more. macs crash, by the way. mine froze on imovie the first day i got it. impressive, ey? of course, mac os x leopard is stunning. its fast, its intuitive and best of all, it's simple. but i like windows just as much. they both have their strengths and weaknesses. oh, by the way, the "vista sucks" debate got old when it was discovered none of the haters have even TOUCHED it. I have a hard disk camcorder and bought this to capture and edit my movies, only to find it doesn't work with HD cameras or on a USB. This is not new technology so for me a bit of a waste of money.

It works really well with Windows XP, but as soon as I installed it on my new Windows Vista PC, nothing worked anymore. The whole computer freezes up. Upon restarting the computer and uninstalling Bullguard Version 8 (previous versions did not work with Vista at all I believe) computer works fine again. Tried this several times and decided to look for a different Virus Package.Did a search on the internet to see if anyone else had a problem and it seems I am not alone!

After I recently ditched the PC in favour of a Mac I found the one application I missed more than anything was MS Money. Mac users are not exactly spoiled for choice when it comes to good, reasonably priced personal finance applications so I settled for Personal Accountz (PAZ). Whilst PAZ does the job it is meant to do more than adequately it is not on par with, say, MS Money. The user interface in MS Money is far more intuitive than that of PAZ, and PAZ looks and behaves much more like a double entry bookkeeping system. As an accountant this isn't really a problem, but I can see that for some this may be a bit baffling at first. Some basic set-up work is required before you can start using PAZ. We have used Quickbooks for 13 years and it has been marvellous. But Quickbooks 2008 is a nightmare. It crashes constantly. No longer has multi currency. The VAT calculations are wrong, the support staff are expensive, you can't understand them, they try to get you to make accounting entries illegal under UK law. They ask you to change correct transaction dates, make up nominal accounts called vat error and then ask you to transfer £100,000's into it!! Their sales staff lie to potential customers and say that there are no VAT problems, but there are, you only have to log onto their support website 'http://community.quickbooks.co.uk/' and look under VAT. I ordered this from Amazon who as usual offered a very competative price and good delivery, so no argument there at all. However, the software is very disappointing. The major issue being that know where on any of the Quickbooks documentation or on the Intuit websites does it tell you this will not allow you to load any previous Quickbooks company files. Our business is very simple, no stock, no salaries to pay, the only complication being VAT (which I now understand it calculates incorrectly anyway). We don't need all the functions in the Pro version at all, so this looked ideal. So be warned, look else where if you already use another version of Quickbooks. The only good thing is the 30 day return to Intuit warranty, which I will certainly be using.
