Travel : British Bed and Breakfast (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay)
This book has proved to be a god send when i have needed to find a good bed and breakfast when i have been travelling round the country with my work, which is often. All the places i have stayed have been top notch and now it is the first place i always go to in order to find a reliably good place to stay.
The places are described extremely well and the book itself has delightful photos of the places which also makes it a pleasure to read.
The book will tell you everything you need to know about the property; the hosts, how many rooms are there, whether they allow pets/children etc and if they are "green/organic".
This book is well worth the purchase and i doubt you would need to have any other bed and breakfast book, or ... Read More:

Travel : Italy (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay)
Alastair Sawday is simply the best. We first purchased this Italy Guide book with the aim of getting an idea of where we would like to stay on our Honeymoon in Italy. Before booking anyting we decided to buy the UK Bed and Breakfast guide and try out a few places. We stayed in Yorkshire, Devon and Dorset and were sold. During our Honeymoon we stayed at 3 places listed in the Italy book and all were absolutely perfect. These are the only guide books we have found where the description perfectly matches reality - we had an amazing couple of weeks! Since this trip we have travelled in France, again using these guides, this time staying in 4 places, and we were not dissappointed once. Thanks Alistair.

Much like all of Sawday's fantastic guide's, this latest guide to the Pubs and Inns of Britain is quite superb. Having just returned from 4 days in Cornwall, my husband and I visited 9 Sawday pubs! They were all exceptional -We became quite excited at the thought of what we'd find at each new spot, tiny smugglers fishing coves with sumptous beer and crab, stunning cliff-top views with crashing seas, Doom Beer and spinach, rosemary & bacon soup or even peaceful river views with a barbecue. Quite unique- we wouldn't go away without it now. It is so incredibly refreshing to find a guide to not only the great British pub but especially the ones with our wonderful Britsh produce. Do not hesitate to buy this.

My family & I live in India and run a Travel Consultancy business for visitors to India and Bhutan. We have sent our guests to many parts of the country, visiting hotels we have discovered ourselves and also those run by our relatives & friends.
After having bought this guide book we were pleased to discover that many of our most favored places are listed beautifully.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling extensively in India & looking for just the right place to stay.

An absolutely fantastic buy. I travelled to Italy for three weeks this year and booked most of my accommodation through this guide. It made all the difference to my holiday. What I liked was that it wasn't based on star rating, but on how nice a place actually is. The highlight for us was Frances Lodge in Sienna. Here the setting, pool, owners and not to mention the breakfast were all glorious. Only for this guide, we wouldn't have had such an enjoyable holiday. I now have a collection of these guides and love browsing through them fantasising about where I'll go next!!!

I used this book for a 2 week vacation Aug-Sep '07 travelling through Turkey and on the whole the places it recommended to stay were very good. On average beds were comfortable with clean white linen, and the bathrooms clean and in a good condition. What I liked also, was that each B&B seemed to have a real character of its own including that of the host! The breakfasts were good value too.

The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the book clearly needs updating (which should happen in 2008): prices are no longer accurate e.g. on average rooms are an extra 20 Turkish Lire a night on top of the printed price and one place - Villa Carla at Datca was no longer open. So calling ahead to make a reservation is best if you can. In conclusion, ... Read More:

Why did I title my review like this? Quite simply, the reason is that I have the previous edition and normally would not dream of updating with the previous version only just over a year old. However, when I saw in the foreword that there were around 50 additions in the latest, I couldn't resist (particularly given the current good offer on Amazon!). The main reason I couldn't resist is that a couple of months ago I stayed in the best hotel (note, not the one with the most stars) I have ever stayed in in this country. I'm not going to give away where it was but it lived up to all of the Sawday's promises 'nothing dull', 'delightful people' and so on. It was wonderful.

The latest edition is already well thumbed ... Read More:

If you are prepared to spend, say, £40-£50 per night on B&B then this book is an excellent resource for finding superb accommodation. The book covers a wider price range but we reckon most fall into this category (allow for annual inflation if you use an old copy). All 10 places we stayed at during 2005 & 2006 met our expectations from reading Sawday so we are comfortable with the basic objectivity of the reports in the book. Indeed, the experience of staying in many of these places formed some of the 'highpoints' of our holidays, rather than being just nice places to be overnight; of course, the places themselves deserve the credit for this, not Sawday but use this book and find them with confidence!
