Travel : Alastair Sawday's British Hotels, Inns, and Other Places (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay British Hotels, Inns, & Other Places)
There are those who travel because they must - and dismal concrete boxes line the highways to house them on such travels. But if the object of your journey is unashamed pleasure, and moreover warm and joyous interaction with the British Isles, then pack Alastair Sawday in your glovebox. Ivy-covered cottages, gaunt remote castles, Highlands retreats you can access only by boat (with details how) - Sawday's Britain is a cheerful place on a human scale, magnificently devoid of Arndale Centres or multi-storey car-parks. The photography is inspiring, and the witty write-ups catch the individuality of each property. Thorough and practical maps, a glossary of saxon place-names, and 2-3 entirely spoof entries elevate this from a mere list of hotels ... Read More:

Special places to stay is an excellent companion to any journey around Spain, but it can prove a little dangerous, as its easy to start getting tempted towards exploring some of the more expensive options. although the book does cover a wide range of accomodation from casa rurals right through to converted monastries, it is certainly for the most part not for the budget traveller, although many of the places covered offer very good value for money, and the comprehensive details provided with each special place gives extensive details on what meals and so on are included, and occasionaly recomending specialities.
The book is well served by maps at the front which give numbered references to the special places along your route, and this allows ... Read More:

Recently we stayed in a number of establishments recommended through this guide; well done for producing such a great book! By the way we also use their guides to other regions of the world - excellent too.

Amongst those we stayed in we particularly enjoyed Hotel Le Domaine aux Quat'Saisons, Carcassonne [...]; a haven of exceptional good taste, comforts and style, not to mention the delicious food.

Why did I title my review like this? Quite simply, the reason is that I have the previous edition and normally would not dream of updating with the previous version only just over a year old. However, when I saw in the foreword that there were around 50 additions in the latest, I couldn't resist (particularly given the current good offer on Amazon!). The main reason I couldn't resist is that a couple of months ago I stayed in the best hotel (note, not the one with the most stars) I have ever stayed in in this country. I'm not going to give away where it was but it lived up to all of the Sawday's promises 'nothing dull', 'delightful people' and so on. It was wonderful.

The latest edition is already well ... Read More:

I have used this, and other Alastair Sawday guides, many times and have always found them excellent. The information has proved to be accurate and the descriptions idiosyncratic but informative. I have stayed at 5 or 6 places located through the guide, and they have universally proved excellent.
