This product is great as far as it goes - the spiral binding allows it to lay flat and the scale is large enough to glance at while driving (which is what I bought it for), however it doesn't quite go all the way out to the M25 ring which may be a pain if you live near the edge of the zone covered as I do. I run out of map to the northwest beyond my homepage and sincerely wish it covered Uxbridge, Northwood, Watford, Bushey and Borehamwood - but it doesn't, and its similarly curtailed all around London; Chingford is in but Loughton is out, Dagenham is in but Romford and Hornchurch are out, Bexley is in but Dartford is out, Chislehurst and Farnborough are half in and Orpington is out, Croydon is mostly in but Purley is out, Carshalton is in, ... It would seem almost impossible to write a one-volume travel book on the USA but somehow Rough Guides has managed it in style.

I would usually hesitate to spend more than £15 on a paperback but this is so detailed and well-written I find myself returning to it again and again.

These days it's probably easier to use online resources when choosing accommodation but as a pithy guide to resorts and for planning trip itineries, this Rough Guide is invaluable.

I did the Coast to Coast walk back in '89 (in baking hot weather) and again - partly - in '96 (in pouring rain). Up to this day the memory of this walk remains with me as vividly as ever and I consider that forthnight as the most wonderful two weeks in my life. AW learnt me to appreciate the North English Countryside with its quiet villages and open spaces, its desolate moorlands and austere fells. Furthermore, I consider this guide a little gem because of the hand drawn illustrations, maps and (witty) narrative. I mean - who hand-writes a book?
These days you will need additional map material because the route has changed in places, but this book is a requirement. I still remember reading the C-to-C walker's log book in the Danby Wiske ... Read More:

Having recently located from one capital city (London) to another (Ottawa) I can thoroughly recommend this guide to anybody contemplating a similar move. So far (three weeks in Canada and counting) I have not found a topic that I needed advice on that this book could not answer. In fact, I have frequently found that I am perhaps better informed than some of the resident population! The book's style is open and engaging, and where differences between provinces exist they are outlined accurately and succinctly. My only, minor, criticism is that the indexing could be better, but not by much. If you combine this book with one of the better tourist guides I can't see that there would be much you aren't prepared for.

This book is fantastic and i would highly recomend it to anyone going back into the hills after a long summer. It is very easy to forget the nessessary skills to walk in the mountains safely but this book explains each one with clear pictures and text.

If there is just one Atlas you would like to own, then the DK Atlas is probably the best choice you will make. The print quality and resolution is simply superb, and the large format makes even the smallest of features and places legible. The atlas has an excellent index and the format is easy to understand.
This atlas is an invaluable reference for adults and children alike. It's hard binding makes it a book that will last years even with the roughest handling ( which it will probably get , if it is bought for a home ). A great buy ... get one today !

Either not many places in Britain allow dogs or this guide just doesn't have enough information. Some areas are well covered but some have pitifully few entries (London in particular). Also many of the hotels listed say dogs are allowed in bedrooms only but must be accompanied at all times. How are you supposed to make that work? Hardly any B&Bs are listed
Good guides are generally excellent and this is a great idea but just needs to be more comprehensive.
