This is a well written account of an amazing year on Everest but climbing the highest peak on the planet is only half of it. This book opens the door into the darkest recesses of the human mind and shows the extraordinary determination, mental strength and overriding will to survive that we as humans are capable of. Perhaps strange but it made me want to climb a mountain!

If you ever think of visiting a European City, want that perfect boutique hotel and have a limited amount of time i.e. a weekend, then you will love this book! I've been to Paris a couple of times before and went again using Mr & Mrs Smith European Cities and it's like a new city to me now! Fantatatcic - can't recommend it enough. The hotel was called Hotel L'A and was exactly how they described and we even got a free cocktail with our Smith card (there's a cool card in side the book which gets you offers at all the featured hotels) Every bar and restaurant we went to was also a top recommendation. They also cover Florence, Venice, Sockholm, Talinn, Milan, Prague - can't remember the rest - about 12 great destinations. At last a guide ... Read More:

(4.5 stars) When John Steinbeck obeys a life-long urge to drive from coast to coast in 1960, he little anticipates the variety of the "American experience." Beginning in Maine and traveling along the northern states through Wisconsin, the Badlands, Montana, and all places in between, to Washington and Oregon, Steinbeck then decides to visit his childhood community of Salinas, in northern California. After meeting with friends there, though many have died, he then drives southward through the length of California and then eastward through the southwest desert to Texas, Louisiana, and eventually up to Virginia before returning to New York.

This is a good, useful map. Two sided, each 55cm x 65cm, scale 1:40,000, 2.5cm =1km, which is about 1.5inches = 1 mile. Not quite as good as a British Ordnance Survey map, but better and cheaper (from Amazon) than any maps I saw in Madeira. All the main roads, tourist info, contours, (with good background colouring to indicate height, essential in such a mountainous region), footpath details, with references to walk numbers in guide-books, levadas, a place-name index... There is also a small street-map of the centre of Funchal, but it's really too small to be of use. Collect a free advertising tourist map from your hotel for the centre of Funchal. David Brawn's Madeira Bus & Touring map is also useful if you plan on using local buses.

Written by Jon Krakauer of "Into Thin Air" fame this book didnt live up to my expectations. Its a little book containing twelve short essays on various aspects of mountaineering.Although entertaining and at times amusing i was nonetheless glad to finish it quite quickly. Its best read when someone doesnt want to launch into an epic, but dare i say a bit disappointing

I bought this book a year ago with a number of other related books, when
my son was two and a half. I am one of a group of mothers who meet weekly
with our children in local woodlands and we've used it every season since and we're looking foreward to the coming year to try activities my son and his friends were too young for before. The ideas are simple and easy to follow or re-invent according to different enviornments and the photographs are inspirational on cold winter days when the warmth of the indoors is difficult to leave.

Travel : No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks
This book is really different from the usual climbing fare. Ed Viesturs is a climber who was able to turn back at critical points, an attribute that few share. I'd throughly recommend this as an alternative to the derring do of most climbing books. He seems to be a very determinded as well as displayhing a rare type of courage -- the courage to say no. A very refreshing read.

It is basically his biography starting with his early years and then on to the stories behind his ascents of the world's 14 8000m peaks. The first American to achieve this feat
