I watched the movie before I read the book, and while the movie brought tears to my eyes, the book broke my heart (SOBBING). I NEVER read a book after I have watched its movie but Jon Karkuer did an amazing job. Even though I knew how it would end I still found myself wanting, hoping, praying Christopher McCandless would make it out alive. I am a first time reader of Jon Karkuers' work and I am really impressed.

I am so pleased that the "This Is" series of books by Miroslav Sasek are back in print. Elsewhere, the comments on Sasek's work have been "only good for children up to 3 years!" Well, I'm in my fifties and I intend to collect the ones I most enjoyed as a child, such as This Is San Francisco and This Is Rome. In an age of electronic wizardry Sasek's books stand out as a reminder of a time when books were the chief form of entertainment and education. Sasek's art and wit are truly original and unique. He manages to take the reader on a journey through both the landmarks of his subject and the everday minutiae that makes up a country and its culture. Each book is a remarkable achievement. A Walk in The Woods was an adventure in itself for me. I have previously walked long distance trails in England and sat gobsmacked as I read how long the AT was and that Bryson was going to walk it without any real training. But I'm so pleased that he did. He takes his mate along with him, who at first you wish Bryson would shove over a cliff, safe in the knowledge that he could blame a deliverance style event but gradually we learn to love Steven and marvel at his endurance. Bill is clearly much fitter and much kinder but they make for a great team - take him somewhere else with you. Maybe this is not for the very serious walker, but for those of us not up to the longer walks, this provides a very good resource in terms of variety and coverage and the fact it caters for shorter walks. It would not be possible to provide the required level of detail for all 1001 walks in one book, so I think a local map would always be advisable. We are pleased with it.

Verg good map, if your interrailing, this is much better than the map you get with the ticket, many more stations are listed, although if your just staying in major cities/capitols you can prob make do with the interrail suypplied map.

As it is small and lightweight it is ideal just to tuck in your suitcase or backpack no need to carry a big bulky map around. A must for any NZ traveller, at a reasonable price.

I am anti American or at least the American government and many ideals, but this book has helped me to think again about why Americans as are they are, and why we view them as we do. It has challenged my prejudices and helped me to review the good and/or revolutionary things about the US. Easy to read, with the recognisable and comforting from-our-own-correspondent-style, it was full of amusing stories and thought provoking analysis of events. I am giving it to everyone for Christmas - it will entertain and inform in equal measures. I highly recommend it!
