If you are obsessed with history, ancient monuments, architecture and relics this is probably the book for you.

As a tourist guide, to tell what is worth seeing/photographing, i.e the aesthetics, I find it virtually useless. It does give routes, with some warnings about where congestion may occur in the summer and identify some parking spaces, but the rest is generally vague and somewhat inconsistent. Even the restaurant prices are given in Francs, in a used copy which may not be the latest edition but a book with a 2001 copyright.

This review is in the context of having already booked accomodation and wanting to plan a detailed itinerary, with intensive and diverse photography in mind, in advance, this being my standard ... Read More:

Travel : Buying a Property: Italy ("Sunday Times" Buying a Property)
Although this took 6 weeks to arrive (which I guess shows how popular it is) it was worth the wait. Its a great place to start for anyone considering buying property in Italy. I have now lent it to a friend who is probably going to buy something in Ambruzzo, and although I ended up not buying property in Italy if I ever did - I would ask for this book back again.

It's got good advice about the regions and important checklists - things to consider costings for things like replacing roofs, renovations etc.

Although if you are thinking of buying in Italy and if you want to renotate though the golden rule is:

You must be on site for anything to happen or hire a great project co-ordinator which can be a bit costly ... Read More:

I cannot vouch for the Prague or Budapest thirds of this book but the Vienna section is littered with grisly and disheartening spelling mistakes; These errors are compounded, in one case, by an attempt to derive a false etymology from a false spelling. I think it is discourteous of publishers to offer for sale a book so peppered with mistakes. There are other (and more trustworthy) guides to Vienna.

This book is good, although much of the section on charges and taxes are no out of date as a new property tax was introduced in Portugal in 2004. The book refers to this but has no detail, for example different rates are payable if this a permanent residence or a second home.

Travel : Corsica (Cadogan Guides)
Corsica is a much larger and more varied island than the first time visitor might expect so a good guidebook is essential, (Corsica is roughly the same size as Wales). The Cadogan Guide has an excellent balance of reference and background information, with enough detailed text to allow informed decisions on where to visit. However, some simple local maps to accompany the guide's recommendations would have been helpful as even a Michelin roadmap struggles to make sense of Corsica's rural roads, leading to a few wrong turns on the way when hunting for that remote beach or tower, (not a real problem if you've adopted a suitably chilled out holiday mood). I'd recommend Corsica to those who love the rural and less developed regions of mainland France and ... Read More:

Travel : Prague
Rough guides and lonely planets annoy me because they unceremoniously dump factoids upon you, and are often culturally insensitive. (They serve a purpose for basic information though, so sometimes it is advantageous to put up with them.) This book is different. I expect it will amaze and delight you if you go at it expecting just another travel guide. It is learned, incisive, and even wildly humorous at times. Like a knowledgeable friend. The best!
