Far, far superior to the Lonely Planet guide, which (as usual) seems to have been written sitting in a bar somewhere, relying on second-hand information. The Rough Guide, on the other hand, feels fresh, vibrant and accurate. Far more comprehensive, it explores places slightly off the beaten track, has far better restaurant listings and is much easier to use generally. Lonely Planet is trendy and ubiquitous, but after a back-to-back test, you have to wonder why. The Rough Guide has far more on the history and culture of the country, and is far more readable. One feels it has been written by people of intelligence and culture; the LP, on the other hand, feels as though it has been scribbled by semi-literate back-packers. Perhaps therein lies the ... I really enjoy a book which can make me laugh out loud on the train going home from work. This book has the ability to do that. There are ups and downs (laughter and sadness), which I think makes the book much more interesting. Tony has a way of making it seem effortless to keep the reader turning each page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone thinking of reading it, although I may recommend "Round Ireland with a Fridge" first.

This map travelled around southern india with and was my best friend!!

It's very accurate, lightweight, waterproof and easy to read (not so easy to fold, but I've not yet met a map that is!)

My husband bought this book as we were travelling to Orlando with friends. We had been to Orlando previously, but it was over 7 years ago.

This book it packed with really useful tips and hints. We planned all our activities based on the quietest days to travel - and we had a great time, the longest ride we waited for was 20 minutes. However it was September and this is usually one of the quiestest times to travel.

Every day the book would be with us, I have since passed onto my friends to use, definately worth the money. It even has discount cards in the back, which we used at one of the Retail Outlets - 15% off Adidas, as well as lots of other stores.

As usual an excellent publication Eyewitness.Very comprehensive coverage by area in alphabetical order.
Maps clear an concise especially with the enlarged section which is useful for walking about especially as it has a fold over book mark.
Found the two part maps of the Forum East/west difficult to use as you tend to visit it in one go.
When you use the Palatine map unless you enter by there suggested entrance it is quite hard to relocate
I would definately buy one but i linked mine with an OXford Archaeological Guide by Amanda Claridge.
Ate at some of the retaurants in the guide they were reliable, checked off some of the hotels it suggested but contacted hotels own websites for better deals.

I bought this, along with the Rough guide to Hong Kong & Macau and the Rough guide DIRECTIONS: Hong Kong & Macau (as I couldn't make up my mind which seemed best!) and have to say, this is the one I used on my trip. The pull out map is a lifesaver & I would have been completely lost without it. The book is divided up into sections by geographical area and then tells you what to see and do/where to eat and drink there. I found this much easier to use than the rough guide, which had an "eating" section - you then had to decide what type of food you were in the mood for and then see if any of the restaurants in that category were in the district you were visiting. Confusing! Obviously, the book is titchy which is great for stuffing in yourr pocket ... Read More:

On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there.

In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English.

Following on from my previous point, the writing system will pose a problem and is one this book cannot solve, not that it aims to. Rather you will just have to be adventurous ... Read More:

I don't know anything about motercycles, and could not put this book down! Even though I havn't seen the show I really felt like I was there for the whole journey. Charley does an excellent job of recording his reactions, even when they are all over the place. I really apreciate the honesty he put into the book. The inclusion of so many other Dakar stories really rounds it out, creating a true picture of the race, not just a celebrity's attempt, and would be an exciting, inspiring read no matter who wrote it.

This map is an absolute must for anyone going to Marrakech. I recently went and not only would have been totally lost without it, but would have missed out on some of the treasures Marrakech has to offer. Street names are a rarity but this map makes up for the lack of them by being absolutely perfect - even through the maze of the souqs! Without it i may have had to resort to pay a few dirham to be guided by locals who either take you on a roundabout route to where you want to be, normally via their cousins tannery, or send you in completely the wrong direction and laugh at you as you go. Buy it before you leave or suffer the consequences!
